Among the various approaches, dietary control holds a key position, especially for diseases requiring strict management of food intake. The obesity epidemic has grown to affect a significant fraction of the U.S. population, including one-fifth of children and over a third of adults. The adverse health effects of uncontrolled obesity are far-reaching. It raises the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer, thereby leading to substantial medical expenses. The need for careful dietary management in combating obesity cannot be overstated. Dietary habit management also plays a crucial role in controlling diabetes, a condition often linked with obesity. Effective diabetes management requires constant monitoring of blood glucose levels, which are directly impacted by the type and amount of food consumed. Given this background, there's an urgent need for innovative solutions to monitor and manage the dietary habits of patients with obesity and diabetes. Such a solution could aid in real-time monitoring of dietary habits, facilitate weight loss, manage blood glucose levels effectively, and ultimately, help reduce the societal costs associated with the treatment of obesity and diabetes. To address this requirement, a custom-designed wearable device has been developed. This device is designed to monitor dietary habits in real-time, offering an innovative and practical solution. It promises to play a vital role in obesity and diabetes management by enabling personalized diet modifications and providing valuable insights for effective disease control. Auditory Deficits of Mild Blast-induced Traumatic Brain Injury (bTBI) Fernando Aguilera de Alba (Mike Heinz, advisor) [Fernando Aguilera De Alba] Abstract: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an increasing casualty among civilians and military personnel. TBIs are estimated to affect 69 million civilians annually, and approximately 18,500 service members were affected in 2022. These numbers are not expected to decrease in the coming years. TBI is a complex pathology comprised of an acute mechanical injury phase followed by a chronic phase characterized by metabolic and biochemical changes. Injuries are classified as mild, moderate, and severe based on neurological examination and neuroimaging; however, misdiagnosis is common since symptoms are hard to detect. Objective neuroimaging techniques only rule out life-threatening injuries (i.e., intracranial lesions or hemorrhage) in mild and moderate TBIs-failing to detect subtle, but important, structural abnormalities. Hearing loss is often associated with TBI since trauma tends to affect the areas responsible for auditory processing in the peripheral and central nervous system, especially in blast-related injuries given the intense sound levels experienced. Although the high susceptibility of the auditory system to mild and moderate brain injury can be exploited as an avenue to develop sensitive diagnostics of TBI, the underlying mechanisms of injury at the peripheral and central level remain unknown.
