I had quite a busy first week with all the ongoing exciting and critical matters and meetings to attend. I am getting there to help make sure the department runs smoothly. This note is long as I have included updates from two committee chairs (Andrew and Hugh). * At the operational level, please do not hesitate to let me know your requests (letters, approvals, etc.). I will try to have zero email backlog on simple requests by the end of the day. I typically do batch processing periodically throughout the day. At the tactical level, in addition to working closely with Young and Vitaliy, I will meet regularly and keep transparent communications with a leadership team, including many department-level committee chairs of critical missions/affairs. Regarding key issues especially those at the strategic level, I will frequently consult our senior colleagues. * It is so good to hear many of us won research grants over the summer. Congratulations to all! The department will find creative and diverse ways to recognize you for your accomplishments including all aspects of research/innovation, teaching/mentoring, and service/engagement, and other things that normally do not fall in the above categories. * I have received a couple of nominations for "Moveable Dream Hires". Please continue to send me your input. * BME has the honor and privilege to help CoE organize the first Purdue Engineering Distinguished Lecture of this academic year. The distinguished lecturer will be Dr. Huda Zogbhi, Distinguished Service Professor, Baylor College of Medicine, and Director, Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children's Hospital. She will visit Purdue on September 20 (Wednesday). We will be the host department. Krishna and Young are taking the lead on organizing events surrounding this visit. Please encourage your students to attend her lecture at 10:30 - 11:30 am on 9/20, which will replace our regular seminar. * BMES early bird registration deadline is approaching. See the message later in this email. As I announced in last Friday's faculty meeting, the department can cover your registration and BMES membership in a total of $825. The deadline for this offer is September 6th. * I am in the process of preparing the agenda for our BME Advisory Board meeting. The meeting will be held on Friday, September 22nd. I will approach some of you to ask for your availability on that day. * We had a packed agenda last Friday. I will schedule updates and presentations in our future faculty meetings in such a way that gives us more time to ask questions and discuss issues. Jeff Lucas, Professor of SLHS will present "The duck project. Huh? What duck project? Glad you asked..." Abstract: Next to chickens, Pekin ducks are one of the most important sources of poultry-derived meat. Duck rearing obviously requires keeping relatively large numbers of ducks in relatively small areas. This arrangement can result in various levels of physiological stress, which has impacts on animal welfare and also on productivity. Our project on this topic has three phases. The first is to characterize the vocal system of Pekin ducks, something that surprisingly hasn't been done before. The second is to use the duck vocal system as a preliminary source of information about stress. This includes determining whether there is environment-dependent call syntax and whether the spectral properties of calls vary with the environment. 'Environment' includes both social environment and several types of 'enrichment'. The third is to see if we can identify vocal elements that might be broadcast to the ducks to mitigate stress. As a reminder: the entire building air handling system in MJIS will be turned off. ALL chemical hood activity, biosafety cabinet activity, autoclave work and activities in wet labs will need to STOP by 5 PM on Monday, October 16th. Any chemicals stored in the hoods will have to be sealed at that time. Signs will be posted on all hoods to remind users not to use the hoods Monday evening, and removed when the maintenance work is completed and normal operations can resume. Please plan ahead - DO NOT use chemicals in the lab areas that you would normally use in the hoods. Antimicrobial Resistance Seminar Series - Purdue The College of Veterinary Medicine and Institute for Drug Discovery want to invite you to join fellow scientists at Purdue for the launch of the inaugural Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Seminar series. According to the U.S> Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration, 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant infections occur annually in the US, resulting in 35,000 deaths. Combating AMR requires multifaceted efforts both the healthcare and veterinary sectors. In response to this critical public health threat, scientists at Purdue are working together to increase awareness and discover solutions for advanced diagnostics, treatment, and prevention. Qiuting Wen, PhD, Assistant Professor of Radiology and Imaging Sciences, Indiana University School of Medicine will present "Imaging Brain's Waste Clearance Pathways." (Note: Students registered for the seminar are expected to attend in-person.) Abstract: Devoid of lymphatic vessels, how does the brain tissue clear its waste? This mystery has puzzled scientists for centuries. About a decade ago, in 2012, a Danish neuroscientist unraveled the mystery, unveiling the Glymphatic system - a specialized fluid pathway of the brain that efficiently removes brain's waste proteins without the need for any dedicated transporter protein. Instead, this pathway relies on a network of fluid-filled tunnels called the paravascular space, functioning as a plumbing system to flush away waste, particularly active during sleep. This groundbreaking discovery sparked a wave of interest in Neuroscience, prompting deeper investigations into its mechanisms, due to its potential implications in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, characterized by the buildup of waste protein. However, a significant challenge remains due to the limited availability of non-invasive imaging techniques for studying this system within the human brain. Biography: Dr. Qiuting Wen (pronouned chiu-ting) obtained her Ph.D from UCSF-UC Berkeley Joint PhD Program in Bioengineering, where she conducted her research in brain tumor imaging and developed a keen interest in MRI. After graduation, she moved to Indiana University to continue her research as a postdoc with a focus on advanced diffusion MRI. She is the developer of dynamic Diffusion-Weighting Imaging (dynDWI) for measuring the paravascular cerebrospinal fluid (pCSF) dynamics - a key component of the brain's waste clearance function (glymphatic system). Makin Abstract: Advancements in machine learning are narrowing the gap in visual capabilities between machines and healthcare professionals, resulting in a transformation of the way we understand and address health challenges. Despite these advances, underlying limitations persist in addressing real-world problems, particularly in the precise capture of biological and physiological information. This is primarily because traditional trichromatic cameras fall short of representing reflectance spectra due to their limited spectral information. To overcome these limitations, hyperspectral imaging has emerged as a powerful tool for biomedical applications. By collecting a wealth of information at different wavelengths, hyperspectral imaging provides a comprehensive view of electromagnetic spectra, allowing non-invasive clinical analysis for accurate diagnostics. Snapshot hyperspectral imaging, in particular, is a competitive alternative to traditional cameras as it can capture a hyperspectral image in a single shot without the need for scanning individual wavelengths. Here, we introduce a computational snapshot hyperspectral imaging method, achieved through the integration of a machine learning approach with a streamlined optical system. We design an explainable machine learning algorithm by incorporating optical and biological knowledge into the algorithm. Therefore, the algorithm can reconstruct hyperspectral images with high spectralspatial resolution comparable to those of scientific spectrometers, despite the use of sparse information captured from the optical system. To demonstrate its versatility in biomedical applications, we extract hemodynamic parameters of peripheral microcirculation from embryonic model systems, tissue phantom samples, and human conjunctivas. Furthermore, we validate high accuracy of the results using conventional hyperspectral imaging and functional near-infrared spectroscopy. This learning-powered imaging method, characterized by high resolution and simplified hardware requirements, has the potential to offer solutions for various biomedical challenges by surpassing the constraints of conventional cameras and hyperspectral imaging. Alves, PhD, within the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), is seeking a highly motivated and independent post-doctoral research fellow. Dr. Alves is a Chemical and Biomolecular Engineer, Associate Professor and the Director of Translational Research for the Department of Emergency Medicine in addition to having an affiliate faculty appointment at Purdue University in Biomedical Engineering. The Alves Lab explores highly interdisciplinary research interests applying engineering and biophysical principles and designs to create translational technologies and treatments in the area of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis. The primary focus of research in the laboratory is to develop targeted clot digesting therapeutic agents to more safely digest clinically relevant blood clots to treat pulmonary embolism (PE, blood clots in the lungs), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and ischemic stroke. This interdisciplinary research utilizes diverse enzyme assays, chemical synthesis, blood clot formation and digestion assays under shear, and other novel testing/delivery platforms that include multivalent branched molecules and nanoparticle drug delivery systems. Projects Include: (1) Leveraging multivalency to modulate enzyme activity and improve inhibitor selectivity (nanoparticle drug delivery and targeting). (2) Ex-vivo flowing models of clot digestion under shear using in-vivo like fluorescently labeled blood clots from human whole blood. (3) Development of novel fibrinolytic diagnostics tools to assess coagulation state. (4) Mouse models of clot formation/targeting/digestion utilizing intravital microscopy. In honor of this year's Watanabe Awardee, Dr. Zoghbi, our annual meeting theme will focus on translational neuroscience.
