We talked about how to proceed with the partnership development with Ascension Health, who came to visit us last Tuesday, and how to advance partnership development in general. It is important that we have the right mindset when approaching such partnership opportunities. I also talked about my plan for the last faculty meeting of this semester and the ones next semester. In the last faculty meeting of the semester, we would like to take a moment to look at the status of our academic programs, especially PMP and online programs. I'd also like to go over our teaching assignment model. Note that this is more an information review meeting. More discussions shall follow next semester. Your comments are welcome. * One person has been made an offer for the department Marketing and Communications specialist position. She has tentatively accepted the offer and is excited to be on board. We have started the drafting of the offer letter. I want to highlight tomorrow's seminar here. We have a number of students who may need accommodations for final exams and faculty need to be proactive in scheduling with the Testing Center if they plan to use that. Below is some important information instructors should know if they choose to have Purdue Testing Services (PTS) administer their accommodated exams. * The steps to submit a Testing Instruction Form (TIF) for finals week are the same as any other exam with one notable difference. In the "select the exam group/s for this test" field, be sure to select your course that starts with Accommodated FINAL Exam. This is required before students will be able to schedule during finals week. *If you had already submitted a TIF for your final prior to receiving this email, PTS staff updated your TIF to the correct exam group * Hours of operation: * Monday - Friday | 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. * Exam start times: 8 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. * Saturday | 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. * Exam start times: 8 a.m., 10:30 a.m., Noon and 1 p.m. * Due to the volume of exams we administer, we will not start any exam outside of the start times mentioned above. GRADUATE PROGRAM UPDATE Fellowship Opportunity The Bilsland Dissertation Fellowship provides support for outstanding PhD candidates in their final year or semester of doctoral degree completion. The goal of the fellowship is to allow exceptional candidates to focus exclusively on finishing their dissertation. Salary & Usage: * This fellowship includes $30,000 annual salary, tuition remission, medical insurance premium contribution, and coverage of most fees. Engineering differential fee is not covered. * Bilsland Fellowships are administered as assistantships. It is expected that job duties will contribute to the completion of the student's dissertation. * Bilsland's must be awarded in the student's last term, and the student is expected to graduate at the end of the fellowship term. * This year's Bilsland allocation may be used Summer 2024, Fall 2024, Spring 2025, or Summer 2025. * No additional work appointments may be added, but faculty may (and perhaps must; depending on our minimum salary requirement which may be set in BME) increase the salary or provide additional funds as scholarships. * The fellowship is to be awarded for the full 12 months or until the student graduates, whichever comes first. * Fellowship recipients who graduate before the completion of the fellowship or otherwise stop the fellowship before the full 12 month duration forfeit any remaining funds. * If Bilsland Fellows do not graduate as expected this could hurt our funding allocation from the Graduate School, so please only nominate students you truly expect to graduate and are truly in their final year. Excellence in Teaching Awards Competition Applications are now being accepted for the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) 2024 Excellence in Teaching Awards Competition. The University is eligible to nominate one masters-level and one Ph.D.-level student for each award that includes a citation and a $750 honorarium that will be presented at the MAGS annual meeting on April 3-5, 2024. Interested students must submit their application materials to the Graduate School by Friday, December 1, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. for consideration. Abstract: Congenital heart disease affects 1 in 100 infants and is the leading cause of infant mortality in the US. Among the most severe forms of congenital heart disease is single ventricle physiology, in which the heart develops with only one functional pumping chamber. These patients typically undergo three open chest surgeries, culminating in the Fontan procedure at three years of age. Prior work has extensively explored the use of multiscale models, combining hemodynamics with lumped parameter models of single ventricle physiology to assess surgical methods for all three stages of single ventricle palliation. Here, we present our recent work, which extends traditional models of Fontan hemodynamics to include multiple physical processes and cardiac function. We will discuss our recent progress towards: 1) growth and remodeling of tissue engineered vascular grafts in the Fontan circulation, including a finite element framework for fluid solid growth simulations, and 2) model-driven design of a bioprinted pulsatile conduit to provide a power source for Fontan physiology. Recent methodological advances for generation of vascular networks using optimization will also be described. Finally, we discuss progress and challenges of developing whole heart models incorporating machine learning for image segmentation, fluid mechanics, active contraction, electrophysiology and valves. We will describe open source software and data resources available via the SimVascular project and the Vascular Model Repository. Bio: Alison Marsden is the Douglass M. and Nola Leishman Professor of Cardiovascular Disease in the Departments of Pediatrics, Bioengineering, and, by courtesy, Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. She is a member of the Institute for Mathematical and Computational Engineering. From 2007-2015 she was a faculty member in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UCSD. She graduated with a BSE degree in Mechanical Engineering from Princeton University in 1998, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford in 2005. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University in Bioengineering from 2005-07. She was the recipient of a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award at the Scientific Interface in 2007, an NSF CAREER award in 2011. She was elected fellow of AIMBE and SIAM in 2018, the APS DFD in 2020, and BMES in 2021. She is the 2023 recipient of the Van C. Mow medal from the ASME Bioengineering Division. She has published over 160 journal articles and holds leadership roles in the ASME and APS scientific societies. Her research focuses on the development of numerical methods for cardiovascular biomechanics and application of engineering methods to impact patient care in cardiovascular surgery and congenital heart disease. Abstract: This talk presents an overview of a research portfolio focused on the creation of novel data-driven mathematical models that consider the stochasticity and risk in complex systems, and the development of efficient algorithms, to computer optimal and near-optimal solutions for large-scale scenarios. The application domains highlighted during this seminar include energy-efficient cybersecure manufacturing processes and optimization of energy systems, secure real-time/near-real-time data retrieval from a variety of smart sensors and Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) devices to feed energy analytics methods and enable energy efficient manufacturing processes and supply chain networks. He obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and completed his residency in neurosurgery and fellowship in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery from the University of Tennessee. Dr. Mobasser moved to Indiana to practice with the former Indianapolis Neurosurgical Group (ING), which later became Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine. Dr. Mobasser is board certified by the North American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a founding member of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, and a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Indiana Neurological Society. Starting with two classical TDN structures, we alter the design by changing the size, structure (one or two double-stranded DNA helices on the edges), and attached DNA aptamers for receptor-medicated endocytosis pathway to study the influence of these factors on cellular uptake, stability of TDNs, toxicity, and potential delivery efficiency. We plan on testing our materials in vitro HEK293, SUM159, mice cortical, and human astrocytes cellular lines, as well as in the human BBB in vitro model. To study the biodistribution and tissue toxicity, we will perform in vivo tests of the most prominent TDNs designs on the C57BL/6-wt mouse model, harvest the tissues, and run histology analysis with H&E stains. The TDNs concentration will be measured by measuring implemented into the DNA strands cyanine 3 and 5 dyes fluorescence and the stability will be estimated by Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer measurements. If we succeed in our work, we will develop an effective, exceptionally biocompatible, and stable nanomaterial with great potential applications in drug delivery through BBB, brain imaging, and gene therapy. We expect the main application of this nanomaterial to be in treating and mitigating the symptoms of Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases, as the low BBB permeability poses the main challenge in the way of studying and treating these illnesses. Samantha Hauser and Andrew Sivaprakasam will present "Audiology Research Diagnostics Core (ARDC) & Data Repository: Big Data Analysis for Hearing Research." Abstract: Many labs on Purdue's campus, whether they study hearing directly or not, run (or wish they could run) basic auditory diagnostics to ensure their research participants have appropriate hearing profiles for the study. This data, however, is often not used beyond establishing a subject's inclusion in a study and each lab's test battery may lack standardization or may be incomplete due to resource limitations. To address these problems, the Audiology Research Diagnostics Core (ARDC) was designed to optimize the collection of high-quality audiologic data and to reduce the barrier-to-entry for hearing evaluations (e.g., in non-auditory labs). Not only does the ARDC function as a core facility to facilitate comprehensive hearing evaluations, but it drives the Audiology Research Diagnostics Core Repository (ARDCR). The ARDCR will include data collected in the ARDC as well as across other hearing labs on campus to accumulate large scale datasets for future analyses. We will demonstrate how the ARDCR can also be used by Purdue researchers to recruit participants with specified profiles of hearing, along with the current structure and formatting of this data. Abstract: The material behavior of many biological tissues is due to their unique microstructural arrangements of fibrous extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, i.e., collagen and elastin, within the more amorphous matrix. The orientation of these fibers, and their segregation into discrete regions within the tissues, often gives rise to anisotropy and unique biological stress-strain behavior that enables the essential function of the tissues. Layered or segregated structuring allow hierarchical tissue organization in a manner designed to withstand external forces efficiently while protecting more delicate tissues and cells from damage. These structure-function relationships within biological tissues have been studied for decades but have not been widely translated into the creation of biomimetic scaffolds for use in tissue engineering and in vitro analyses of cell and tissue biology. The Grande-Allen research group has focused on integrating these structural and material characteristics into hydrogel and fibrous biomaterials using a range of fabrication techniques including molding, photolithography, electrospinning, and 3D printing. The majority of our investigations have addressed heart valve disease, which is widely prevalent in our society, with valve replacement or repair in almost 100,000 people in the United States and 275,000 people worldwide each year. More recently, we have translated our fabrication strategies to generate biomaterial platforms for investigating intestinal epithelial cell biology and enteric diseases. Biography: Jane Grande-Allen is the Isabel Cameron Professor of Bioengineering at Rice University. Her research group investigates the structure-function-environment relationship of soft connective tissues through bioengineering analyses of the extracellular matrix and cell mechanobiology, with a focus on cardiovascular and intestinal diseases, as described in >180 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Grande-Allen received a BA in Mathematics and Biology from Transylvania University in 1991 and a PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Washington in 1998. Conditions such as pregnancy, lactation, and aortic stenosis are common etiologies of pressure and volume overload. However, sex- and female-specific variables and recovery are often overlooked in studies of cardiac overload. One of the most common modalities used to study cardiac function, 2D ultrasound, does not fully capture changes that may occur to heart shape and performance given that it is limited to a single imaging plane. To improve our understanding of pressure and volume overload we propose mouse models of lactation, chronic hypertension with pregnancy, and reversible transverse aortic constriction. We hypothesize that four-dimensional ultrasound will reveal the unique ways in which volume and pressure overload in the setting of pregnancy, lactation, and aortic constriction affect cardiac remodeling. Completion of this study will broaden the horizons of maternal cardiac health and lay the framework for future exploration of sex as a biological variable in CVD studies. Alves, PhD, within the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), is seeking a highly motivated and independent post-doctoral research fellow. Dr. Alves is a Chemical and Biomolecular Engineer, Associate Professor and the Director of Translational Research for the Department of Emergency Medicine in addition to having an affiliate faculty appointment at Purdue University in Biomedical Engineering. The Alves Lab explores highly interdisciplinary research interests applying engineering and biophysical principles and designs to create translational technologies and treatments in the area of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis. The primary focus of research in the laboratory is to develop targeted clot digesting therapeutic agents to more safely digest clinically relevant blood clots to treat pulmonary embolism (PE, blood clots in the lungs), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and ischemic stroke. This interdisciplinary research utilizes diverse enzyme assays, chemical synthesis, blood clot formation and digestion assays under shear, and other novel testing/delivery platforms that include multivalent branched molecules and nanoparticle drug delivery systems. Projects Include: (1) Leveraging multivalency to modulate enzyme activity and improve inhibitor selectivity (nanoparticle drug delivery and targeting). (2) Ex-vivo flowing models of clot digestion under shear using in-vivo like fluorescently labeled blood clots from human whole blood. (3) Development of novel fibrinolytic diagnostics tools to assess coagulation state. (4) Mouse models of clot formation/targeting/digestion utilizing intravital microscopy. (5) Study the effects of environmental microplastic exposure on coagulation/fibrinolysis. Projects are funded both externally and internally.
