Say it in Six Competition – Two Weeks Left!

The Graduate School’s annual Say It In 6 competition submission is now open!

For those that need a refresher - Say It In 6® is a competition that challenges people to tell a story about their Purdue experience — in a clear, concise, and, most importantly, creative way — by using only six words and a visual aid (example below). Graduate students, professional students, non-degree students, online students, regional campus graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows are welcome to participate!

Why Participate:

· 1^st place will receive $1,000,

· 2^nd place will receive $500, and the

· People’s Choice Winner will receive $500.

Preliminary Exam Tips

For those preparing to hold your prelim in Spring 2023, refer to the BME website at https://engineering.purdue.edu/BME/Academics/Graduate/PrelimExam for detailed information on the requirements and deadlines. In order to hold your prelim, you must have an approved plan of study on file with the Purdue Graduate School and have completed the majority of your required course work. May 6, 2023, is the deadline to pass the prelim in order for it to count as Spring 2023 (i.e., for eligibility to graduate in May 2024). Note that hybrid or all-virtual prelims are allowable if your advisor and committee members agree to this format.

If you will have an outside-of-Purdue person on your prelim examining committee, contact Sandy at smmay@purdue.edu to verify whether or not the person has a graduate faculty appointment at Purdue. With the person’s CV, Sandy can request a special appointment if needed, but those requests may take up to six weeks to get through the approval process so PLEASE check with Sandy well ahead of your anticipated prelim date.

Workshop Series: Writing Tools for Mid-Stage Doctoral Students

for third, fourth, and fifth-year doctoral students with a current writing project

The Purdue OWL is offering an in-person workshop for doctoral students in their 3rd-5th years. Academics need to produce a quantity of high-caliber writing on a regular basis. The Writing Tools for Mid-Stage Doctoral Students workshop series combines lessons related to productivity with independent writing time that will further attendees’ productivity on specific projects they are currently writing. The workshop meets weekly for 5 weeks in March, with the week of Spring Break used for optional writing time. Participants must attend all 4 of the other weeks and are encouraged to attend Spring Break week. Topics of the workshop include Transitioning from Research to Writing, Maintaining Writing and Publishing Productivity, Clarity & Concision, and Peer Review. Coffee and bagels will be provided, compliments of the Purdue Graduate School.

Spring 2023 Dates/Times: Fridays in March, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, in-person format

Anyone interested in attending this multi-week event should apply between February 13 and February 24, 2023. Complete the application survey here. Attendance will be limited to 35 participants due to space constraints.

We are hosting an in-person and remote event on February 20^th about turning research findings into informed public policy by communicating intelligently with the public and lawmakers, both orally and in writing.

Vanderbilt Integrated Training Alliance (VITA) virtual symposium

On Friday March 31, 2023, The Vanderbilt University Office of Biomedical Research Education and Training (BRET) is hosting the 3^rd annual Vanderbilt Integrated Training Alliance (VITA) virtual symposium for senior graduate students.

About the VITA symposium: The VITA symposium in Biomedical Sciences is designed to introduce senior graduate students to the research and resources at Vanderbilt and to help them develop skills that will enhance their postdoctoral career.

Program elements: Participation in VITA will include:

· Communication Training from the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science. Through a layered series of applied improvisational and communication exercises, participants will explore and practice using communication strategies. Find out more here

· An introduction to ASPIRE, the BRET office of professional development

· Opportunity to meet with current Vanderbilt postdocs

· Individual meetings with Vanderbilt research faculty members

· Learning about the Vanderbilt community and research resources
