As this is an incredible opportunity to hear from a world-renowned expert in public health and health policy, we will be opening up the class to other students who may be interested in attending his lecture, “Perspectives on Health Equity from the 20th Surgeon General of the United States”. Center for Vascular Research Fellowship Opportunity

Per the coordinators, “the CVR fellowship has rolling acceptance. However, we suggest applicants submit their applications early as possible and three months before they are eligible to start working. In addition, a start date can be negotiated based on need and student availability. Finally, the stipend is based on a student's need and funding availability.”

The Center for Vascular Research (CVR) is dedicated to high-quality clinical and translational research by engaging in the following:

Fundamental discoveries of the causes of vascular disease
Translation of basic discoveries into preventive, diagnostic, and treatment protocols
Testing of new protocols and devices for safety, efficacy, and comparative effectiveness
Training and mentoring of emerging physicians and scientists

Our goal is to create a holistic experience for our research fellows that focuses on developing a solid clinical research foundation, one-on-one mentorship, and opportunities to gain clinical experience. Therefore, each research fellowship is tailored to fit the applicant’s needs, interests, and goals. Here, we provide an overview of the goals and expectations for fellows spending dedicated time at the Center for Vascular Research (CVR).

The fellowship is open to the following:

Undergraduate students taking a gap year (or more) during or after their training
Medical, Osteopathic, or Graduate students taking a gap year (or more) during or after their training
Residents in any specialty taking a gap year (or more) during or after their training

If you have any students that are interested in a research fellowship, they should send the following documents to CVR@som.umaryland.edu:

Cover letter detailing the applicant’s interest in the fellowship and anticipated goals
Curriculum Vitae
Letter of good standing from the applicant’s school or program

Future Mentors Program for PhD Students

Future Mentors Program is an HONR 599 course for PhD students who would like to be matched with honors undergraduate students and mentor them in research. They are looking for more engineering PhD students as they have many undergrad engineers interested in participating in the program. Office of Professional Development 2023 Spring Workshop Calendar

The Graduate School’s Office of Professional Development has 100+ new workshops lined up for the Spring 2023 semester. Just a reminder – these workshops are free to attend for all graduate students and postdocs, and many are online. Check out the attached calendar for a list of our currently scheduled spring workshops. The calendar is linked, so if you see something you are interested in, you just need to click the date next to the workshop to access the registration page.

Please note: You must have a GoSignMeUp account to register for these free workshops. Step-by-step instructions for creating an account are attached. If you have any questions, please email profdev@purdue.edu.

Also, don’t forget that the graduate student that attends the most workshops this semester will receive a $250 travel grant!

Spring 2023 Writer’s Rooms

Writers' Rooms are dedicated times and places for graduate writers to work on their academic writing projects (e.g., scholarly articles, dissertations, etc.). Writers should plan to spend most of the two-hour block in independent writing; however, On-Campus Writing Lab tutors will be available for very brief, limited consultations if concerns arise during the writing time. Writers should bring whatever materials they need for successful work on their projects, including laptops, books and articles, style guides, research data, white board markers, pens, paper, etc.

If you are interested in joining, please sign up using the online scheduler under the "Group Programs" drop-down menu. All sessions will begin with goal setting and end with a discussion of what was accomplished.

PLaCE Short Courses

Registration is open for Session 1 of PLaCE Short Courses. https://purdue-place.gosignmeup.com/Public/Course/Browse

Please let your students who may need some extra help know. Enrollment is limited to one class at this time. If space is available after January 16, students may register for a second class. Classes begin January 23^rd or 24^th and end before Spring Break. Session 2 will start after Spring Break.

Classes are non-credit bearing and free to enrolled international students. Visiting Scholars may register on a space available basis after January 16.

Civil Engineering is very fortunate to have Paul Giroux offer a two-credit CE 597 (CRN 26450) class this spring semester.

The class is entitled "Great Projects: Essential Lessons from the Great Builders." Attached is a flier for additional details.

Paul brings a wealth of industry experience in mega projects from his 40+ years at Kiewit Corporation. Paul is the author of several bridge design and civil engineering history papers and has provided over 400 lectures and seminars at nearly 90 engineering schools throughout the United States, and other professional, public, and international venues. His talks have been on topics such as "Building Brooklyn Bridge", "Building Hoover Dam", "Building Golden Gate Bridge", Building Panama Canal", "Building Grand Coulee Dam", "Building Eads Bridge", Building the Transcontinental Railroad", "Building Mackinac Bridge" and "Great Builders."
