Update on CityBus semester passes for on and off-campus routes

Dear Purdue Students,

Purdue has signed a contract to pay a transportation vendor, CityBus, so that your on-campus bus routes will remain free.

In addition, after CityBus decided to charge riders $99/semester for a pass for off-campus routes this year, Purdue has chosen to subsidize off-campus rides for students. For 2024-25, the university will subsidize the full amount.

This new subsidy can be carried out in several ways, e.g., each student rider pays CityBus and then receives a check from the university, or the university pays CityBus for the student riders. For 2024-25, we will take the latter approach.

A semester pass will need to be obtained through CityBus to access off-campus routes, and more information on how to obtain the pass will be forthcoming. On-campus routes can be accessed by showing a Purdue ID and do not require a pass.

Data will be gathered on ridership through this year as Purdue works toward a better long-term solution and future vendor contracts for transportation for on and off-campus students.

Sincerely,

Office of the Provost and Office of Administrative Operations

OWL Intensive Writing Experience for Dissertation Writers

For PhD students writing a dissertation

The purpose of the Intensive Writing Experience (IWE) is to give PhD students in good standing with their programs time to write or to revise their doctoral dissertation with support from Purdue OWL staff.  Those who attended a summer IWE are allowed to apply, but preference will be given to those who have not yet attended.

Participants will receive writing instruction and support from OWL staff, will spend significant time writing or revising their dissertation, and will network with other dissertation writers on campus.

The IWE program for fall is a four-part event, and participants are expected to attend all four sessions.

Fall 2024:

Day/Time:  Tuesdays from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm (ET)

Dates:  Sept 3, 10, 17, & 24

Format:  In person, Krach Leadership Center

PhD students currently working on a dissertation (writing or revising) should apply between August 21-28, 2024.  Complete the application survey here.  For more information, see the introductory material in the application survey or email Writing.Lab@purdue.edu and include IWE in the subject line.

New Thesis Format Review Requirement for Fall 2024 Doctoral and Thesis-option Masters Graduation Candidates

The Office of Graduate Records has been handling an increasing number of thesis or dissertation deposits that are submitted on the deadline but contain format issues which prevent approval and publication. Addressing these issues at the last-minute causes significant stress to students trying to graduate, and also to the faculty and staff working to approve and publish these thesis and dissertation documents.

To help students better prepare for this final deposit deadline, all students planning to graduate this Fall 2024 with a doctoral or thesis-option master’s degree will be asked to submit their dissertation or thesis file for a format consultation by November 20, 2024. Most thesis/dissertation files can be submitted for asynchronous review as an email attachment to thesishelp@purdue.edu or sent via FileLocker to Carla Coffey (cmcoffey@purdue.edu). Students working with export-controlled content, however, will need to schedule an in-person format review rather than send files electronically. In-person consultations can be requested via email to thesishelp@purdue.edu.

This review is just to help make sure that the thesis or dissertation is in the correct format prior to the defense and for future publication. Content changes can still be made to this document at the student and department’s discretion up until the final thesis submission deadline for fall, which is December 4, 2024. Students who are in departments which have their own designated format reviewer can opt out of this central format review requirement.

As a reminder, Purdue templates are available for students to use on the Thesis and Dissertation Webpage.
