Fri., Feb. 24: Faculty Info Session and Roundtable on U.S. Fulbright Faculty Award Program, 3:30-4:30 p.m., WALC 3138, sponsored by the Office of the Provost. The session will be led by Chris Lukasik, provost’s fellow for Fulbright faculty awards, and will be followed by a Q&A. “Purdue continues to be a top-producing institution for the Fulbright Scholar Program,” Lukasik says. “Over half of all Purdue faculty applicants for the Fulbright Scholar award program end up winning.” Faculty interested in developing or expanding their international profile will learn more about the two types of Fulbright awards programs: 1) Fulbright Scholar Award and 2) Fulbright Specialist Award. Lukasik says that attendees will have their questions answered and some misconceptions clarified. The Spring 2023 Final Exam Schedule (aka Last Week Schedule) is attached. Faculty: please review the page carefully to check that your exam is listed, if you have asked for one, and pay special attention to times and locations.  If you had indicated that you’ll be giving an asynchronous online exam, that will not appear on the report. You should note the async exam on your course materials and let your students know what to expect.

 

Please note that it is primarily the instructor’s responsibility to inform students of their last week meeting time and place. Students can access their personal final exam time and room information online as well as their course schedule at this location Personal Final Exam Schedule. Faculty can also access their personal exam schedule information at this location. 

 

As you likely know, students may, in accordance with Senate policy, Final Exam Policy, ask for a make-up time because of a direct conflict or because they have more than two exams on one calendar day. In that case, students must make the necessary arrangements for rescheduling an exam before the last week of regularly scheduled classes. We do not currently have any BME students in this situation. However, in rare instances, a possibly valid request may be made by a student who is not on a list. Please email if you would like us to verify the legitimacy of such requests.  

 

Important - Please keep in mind that the University Senate has determined that final exams are to be no more than two hours in length. Instructors need to write an exam that fits the allotted time slot. We cannot increase the meeting time for an individual exam.

CURE – Purdue accepting applications to design course-based undergraduate research - Purdue University News 

 

Purdue professional development program within the Office of Undergraduate Research is now accepting applications from instructors of any discipline for the 2023-24 academic year. CURE – Purdue seeks to develop course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) across the Purdue West Lafayette campus as a way to increase undergraduate students’ overall access to novel research. The program provides instructors with the time and framework for designing a CURE, either by transforming an existing course or developing a new one. CUREs have a number of features and positive outcomes, including increasing the overall capacity for undergraduate research by operating at a larger scale than the traditional apprenticeship model and increasing inclusion by allowing any eligible student to enroll. Research findings suggest additional benefits to instructors:

The historical success rate for Purdue Faculty, who complete the NSF I-corps workshops, and apply for these competitive NSF research commercialization grants is over 90%. Abstract Surgical tumor resection represents the central component of curative treatment approaches in most patients with cancers of the gastrointestinal tract. While technological innovations such as the adoption of minimally-invasive surgery and the introduction of surgical robots have transformed surgery since the 1970s, postoperative complications remain the third largest contributor to death worldwide. In this presentation, I will demonstrate how Artificial Intelligence-based image recognition and data analysis methods can contribute to the reduction of such complications. Combining routinely available clinical parameters with imaging data and video recordings of minimally-invasive pancreatic and colorectal surgeries, machine learning-based pre- and intraoperative complication risk stratification models were developed. These models could facilitate tailored surgical approaches considering individual cancer patients’ complication risk profiles.

Biography Since 2019, Fiona Kolbinger is a surgical clinician scientist at the University Hospital, the National Center for Tumor Diseases and the Else Kroener Fresenius Center for Digital Health in Dresden, Germany. Her research focus is the intersection of medicine and computer science, as well as the translation of technological innovations, in particular Artificial Intelligence, into clinical practice. Based on automated analysis of medical imaging such as radiological, endoscopic, or microscopic images, she aims to contribute to improving clinical outcomes through more individualized interdisciplinary treatments and better risk and outcome stratification in patients with cancer. Fiona graduated from the University of Heidelberg medical school in 2019 and subsequently completed a research doctorate at the German Cancer Research Center Heidelberg, Germany.

Dr. Kolbinger is a prospective research faculty member and will be hosted by Professor Young Kim.

 

BME Distinguished Seminar Series, Wed., Feb. 15,  9:30 a.m., MJIS 1001 and via Zoom. Ken Yoshida, PhD, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis will present “Neuromodulatory Electrical Stimulation Beyond the Pulse.”

Abstract: The rectangular pulse waveform is arguably the dominant, standard, waveform used to stimulate bioelectrically active tissues. It has a broad range of applications that include functional electrical stimulation (FES), neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), cardiac pacing, sensory electrical stimulation (SES), etc. The mechanism has been well characterized in it's >300 year history. For example, the empirical Weiss-Lapicque strength duration relationship was described over a hundred years ago. Pulse stimulation has a biophyscial property that it preferentially activates large caliber myelinated nerve fibers. The consequence is that it leads to an order of nerve fiber utilization that does not align with the natural utilization of nerve fibers. As such, pulse stimulation is known to have an inverse nerve fiber recruitment property. Normalizing the order of recruitment through electric blocking techniques is particularly important in bioelectronic medicines which the target the small caliber myelinated/unmyelinated nerve fibers of the autonomic nervous system. In late 2016, our efforts in attempting to block nerve activity using kilohertz frequency alternating (kHFAC) block led to an accidental discovery and a new modality that efficiently blocked nerves using low frequency sinusoids that I named low frequency alternating current block (LFACb). In 2018, in another experiment aiming to maximize LFAC block we discovered that the waveform at higher amplitudes activated nerve fibers that led to strong, fatigue resistant muscle contractions. It is a phenomenon we named LFAC activation (LFACa). In-silico models and subsequent in-vivo experiments show that LFAC block and activation have interesting properties. It blocks without onset activation and activates nerve fibers in a size-wise order. LFAC presents itself as a promising new modality for subtractive and additive neuromodulation.

Biography: I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. I received my BS in engineering (biocybernetics) from UCLA in 1989 after spending my first 2 undergraduate years at UCSD and transferring in my junior year. Following my undergraduate degree, I left for graduate work at the University of Utah where I received my PhD in 1994 based upon research developing an advanced peripheral nerve based closed loop functional electrical stimulation (FES) system. My postdoctoral work, December 1994 to April 1998, was at the Division of Neuroscience, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada with Richard B. Stein, the eminent Canadian motor control neurophysiologist, and inventor of the regeneration and cuff electrodes. In April 1998, I joined the Center for Sensory-Motor Interaction (SMI), Aalborg University, Denmark as a research assistant professor and worked with Thomas Sinkjær, the center head. In 2000, I was promoted to Assistant Professor and became a tenure-track faculty member at Aalborg University. I stayed at Aalborg University until 2006 when the opportunity to return to the US presented itself when I joined the faculty of the Biomedical Engineering Department at IUPUI in October 2006.

Nolan Barr is the Senior Manager of Business Excellence and has been with Abbott since July 2021.  A 2005 Purdue Mechanical Engineering graduate, Nolan has held operations, maintenance, engineering, and site leadership positions at Anheuser Busch, Nestle, Heartland Food Products Group (Splenda) and most recently Bastian Solutions (a Toyota company).

Hilary Willcocks is the Manager of Quality Engineering Projects and has been with Abbott since August 2021. A Purdue Chemical Engineering graduate, Hilary has 22+ years of experience encompassing pharmaceutical, biologics and medical devices. Her career has focused on improving manufacturing process and tech transfer/commercialization. Most recently she was employed by Eli Lilly. and Company as Manager of Diabetes Care Manufacturing.

Kohl Erickson is a Staff Supply Chain Analyst and has been with Abbott since March 2016. A 2013 Purdue Industrial Engineering graduate, Kohl spent 3 years in the food & beverage industry as a manufacturing supervisor. In his time at Abbott, Kohl has worked in Corporate Engineering as an Analytics Engineer and Medical Devices as a Senior Industrial Engineer.

Andrew Bitter is an Industrial Engineer supporting Medical Device. He has been with Abbott 3.5+ years working globally in the roles of Manufacturing Engineer, Production Supervisor and Business Excellence Engineer.  Andrew is a Chemical Engineering graduate of The Ohio State University.

Michelle Beers is the Administrative Assistant, Indiana Summer Associate Program Manager and has been with Abbott since November 2022. Michelle has held positions as Executive Assistant, Business Manager, and Business Support Specialist among others in a variety of industries. Frontiers in Biophysics Seminar Series, Wed., Apr. 5,  1:30 p.m. in MJIS 1001. Joe Howard, the Eugene Higgins Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, Yale University, will present “Mechanical Stability of Microtubules.” Microtubules are rigid polymers of tubulin that give structure to cells and serve as tracks for molecular motors. Until recently, the growth and shrinkage of microtubules was thought to be confined to their ends. Over the last few years, however, evidence has emerged that exchange of tubulin in and out of microtubules can take place within the lattice and not just at the ends. I will present our recent work on the microtubule severing protein spastin on microtubule dynamics as well as measurements of the forces necessary to remove tubulin from the lattice. This seminar is sponsored by the Molecular Biophysics Training Program (MBTP), Structural and Computational Biology and Biophysics (SCBB) and the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering.

Course Description: The unique medical needs of pediatric patients in the context of current and emerging clinical technologies are presented in this novel course. Anatomical, physiological, and pathophysiological underpinnings of diseases in infants and children are studied. Unique aspects of pediatric device design, regulation, and translation, including clinical studies and ethical considerations, are explored. Numerous clinical sub specialties such as cardiology, surgery, nephrology, pulmonology, and gastroenterology are examined in terms of technology adoption and remaining clinical needs. Future directions in device development and emerging trends in patient care are considered throughout.
