Want to do biomedical research training at NIH? The Intramural Research Program is the internal research arm of the NIH. Our scientists, trainees, and fellows work in a collaborative research environment using cutting-edge tools to perform interdisciplinary research from the bench to the bedside. We’d like to invite you to learn about training opportunities in the NIH Intramural Research Program for college students, graduate/professional school students, and recent doctoral degree holders.

Summer Internship Program

The NIH Summer Internship Program (NIH SIP) is an opportunity to spend a summer experiencing the biomedical research environment of the NIH Intramural Research Program. In addition to full-time research, all summer interns have access to career, professional, and well-being offerings. This program is for college students, community college students, and graduate students. The application opens mid-November 2024 and closes on February 19, 2025 at noon (ET) with reference letters due on February 26, 2025 at noon (ET). Some summer cohort programs have an earlier closing date.

Postbac Program

Recent college graduates planning to apply to graduate or professional school can spend one or two years doing full-time research and preparing for the next step in their career. All postbacs have access to career, professional, and well-being offerings, including medical and/or graduate school advising. There are no opening/closing dates for the general postbac program, applicants are selected on a rolling basis.

Also, there is the Postbac Enrichment Program (OITE-PEP), a cohort program within the broader NIH Postbac Program. In addition to having access to the resources offered to all NIH postbacs, OITE-PEP postbacs participate in intensive programming within their learning community. The OITE-PEP application opens mid-October and closes on January 10, 2025 at noon ET.

The NIH Graduate Partnerships Program (GPP) is a collaborative education program that allows PhD students to benefit from the academic resources of their university and the research and professional environment of the NIH Intramural Research Program.  For more information and to apply, please visit: https://www.training.nih.gov/research-training/grads/gpp/institutional/. Postdoc Training

Recent PhDs or other doctoral degree holders have the opportunity to work in a highly collaborative research environment with leading scientists and clinicians. Postdocs pursue basic, translational, and clinical research and come from across the U.S. and around the world. There are no open/close dates for this program, applicants are selected on a rolling basis. Open positions are posted on the OITE Job Board.

The Transition from Grad Student to Postdoc

I am Ivonne VIDAL PIZARRO, PhD, Assistant Dean for the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.  We are hosting a virtual event for graduate students who are looking at a postdoc as a next step in their careers.  The event will take place on Tuesday, the 12th of November, from 9-10A US ET.  Students can register here:  https://tiny.utk.edu/pd-grad-school-2-postdoc.  

The event is on the UT calendar - The Transition from Grad Student to Postdoc - Calendar and is described as follows:  
As graduate students wrap up their thesis work and consider next steps, many may consider a postdoc.  This session will provide a brief presentation, which will be followed with a panel of current postdocs.  Panelists will share their experiences and offer their tips and advice with ample time for questions and answers.  
Graduate students are welcome to attend; doctoral students in dissertation stage are the target audience.  

Wisconsin Postdoc Expo November 6th

The Wisconsin Postdoc Expo will take place on Wednesday, November 6 from 10 am - 3 pm CT. This free virtual event will provide critical advice and resources for anyone considering a postdoc position, including graduate students and current postdocs.

• Choosing and securing the right postdoc for you
• Exploring the Wisconsin postdoc experience
