IT is completing its long-running project to retire the phone switch installed more than 25 years ago. A couple of changes that may affect you:

Moving to utilize 10-digit dialing for all outgoing calls:
This dialing method requires users to dial the area code of the person being called as part of the dialing process. For example, 765-555-5555.
All
digits will be required by the end of August 2023.
This

As
we enter a new academic year, ISS would like to share the following information with the advising community:
Official
End of COVID Procedural Adaptations
Earlier
this summer the Department of Homeland Security announced that COVID-related procedural adaptations for international students would come to an end at the end of the 2023 academic year. All international students must meet minimum full-time enrollment requirements
each semester as defined by federal regulation. Minimum enrollment requirements for international students are:
Distance
Learning
No
more than the equivalent of one class or a maximum of three credit hours of coursework delivered via distance/online/synch/asynch may be used toward an international student’s minimum enrollment requirements.
Final
Semester
Students
who are in their final semester MUST be enrolled in all remaining coursework required to complete the degree, they must enroll in
at least one class that requires their physical presence on campus for most of their final semester – even when summer is the student’s final semester, and the distance learning limitation is still in play. If students have questions about final semester
enrollment requirements, please refer them to the ISS office. ISS
Contact Student Services.
If a student is not properly enrolled during their final semester, they will lose valuable post-completion benefits which can severely impact their future goals.

off-campus internships, co-ops, externships, practicums, volunteer opportunities, fellowships, and remote work for non-Purdue employers must be evaluated by ISS to determine if authorization for Curricular Practical Training is required to participate.

Abstract:
The term neurovascular unit (NVU) indicates a brain-specific multi-cellular assembly controlling brain homeostasis for physiological neuronal transmission in networks. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) within the NVU is the microvascular interface that
governs the exchanges between the peripheral blood and the brain parenchyma. It regulates or partakes in inflammatory modifications occurring during disease. Within this framework, we examine BBB damage as a pathophysiological entry point that allows diagnostic
strategies for brain disorders. We examine human and experimental focal epilepsy as a prototype disease to study NVU dysfunctions.
Bio:
Nicola Marchi, PhD: Graduate Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pisa, Italy; a total of 12 years as fellow, post-doc, and PI Assistant Prof at Cleveland Clinic, Neurosurgery, and then Molecular Medicine. Then nine years PI and tenured researcher
at CNRS, France. Funded as PI since 2009 (NIH R01, ANR France, Cure, Era-Net Europe, etc.). Editorial board activities, reviewers for various journals, funding organizations, etc. In 20 years: 120 publications; h-index 46. +10 book chapters. 1 Book as Editor.

Abstract:
Immune response is critical in septic wound healing. The aberrant and imbalanced signaling dynamics primarily cause a dysfunctional
innate immune response, exacerbating pathogen invasion of injured tissue and further stalling the healing process. To design biological controllers that regulate the critical divergence of the immune response during septicemia, we need to understand the intricate
differences in immune cell dynamics and coordinated molecular signals of healthy and sepsis injury. Here, we deployed an ordinary differential equation (ODE)-based model to capture the hyper and hypo-inflammatory phases of sepsis wound healing. Our results
indicate that impaired macrophage polarization leads to a high abundance of monocytes, M1, and M2 macrophage phenotypes, resulting in immune paralysis. Using a model-based analysis framework, we designed a biological controller which successfully regulates
macrophage dysregulation observed in septic wounds. Our model describes a systems biology approach to predict and explore critical parameters as potential therapeutic targets capable of transitioning septic wound inflammation toward a healthy, wound-healing
state.
Biography Dr. Green is Synthetic Biologist
with a diverse academic journey. He earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Hampton University in 2011. With accolades, including the UNCF Merck Science Fellowship and Ronald McNair Fellowship, he pursued doctoral studies in Bioengineering at the University
of California, Riverside. There, he was awarded the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and focused on engineered nucleic acid-based nanostructures, coupling mechanical features with synthetic transcriptional oscillators. Completing his doctorate in 2017, he
joined Caltech as a Post-doctoral Fellow, concentrating on engineering population controllers within synthetic E. coli-based communities. In the Fall of 2021, Dr. Green joined Purdue University's Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. His research centers
on designing and building biological controllers as therapeutic agents for host-microbiome modulation, driven by his passion for addressing chronic inflammation and associated diseases.

“Updated results from a study relating the effects of hearing loss and listening conditions on postural sway to fall risk in older adults.”
Abstract: Hearing loss is associated with increased fall risk in older adults, but multiple mechanisms have been
proposed to account for this. Hearing loss may reduce spatial awareness and/or increase cognitive load, both of which may increase fall risk but may be ameliorated by hearing aid use. We are currently finishing a study study comparing fall incidence in daily
life with postural sway measured under various listening conditions in older adults with and without hearing aids. An earlier version of this talk reported results from the first 17 participants (7 with hearing aids, 10 without). We have now completed enrollment
and initial testing of 46 participants, each of whom stood with feet together and eyes closed, listening to noise vocoded speech (4, 8, 16 channels) and spatially distributed environmental sounds (silence, 1, 3 sources) for 1 minute per condition while postural
sway was recorded in the lab. Participants subsequently reported daily near-falls and falls for 4 months (this phase will be completed in December). Initial results from the first 17 participants suggested that hearing aid users were more stable (or more rigid)
than non-users and this pattern appears similar in the larger sample. Additional analyses will be presented as time permits.

Postdoctoral Fellow Opportunity – IUSM Emergency Medicine
The laboratory of Dr. Nathan J. Alves, PhD, within the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Indiana University
School of Medicine (IUSM), is seeking a highly motivated and independent post-doctoral research fellow. Dr. Alves is a Chemical and Biomolecular Engineer, Associate Professor and the Director of Translational Research for the Department
of Emergency Medicine in addition to having an affiliate faculty appointment at Purdue University in Biomedical Engineering. The Alves Lab explores highly interdisciplinary research interests applying engineering and biophysical principles and designs to create
translational technologies and treatments in the area of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis. The primary focus of research in the laboratory is to develop targeted clot digesting therapeutic agents to more safely digest clinically relevant blood clots to treat
pulmonary embolism (PE, blood clots in the lungs), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and ischemic stroke. This interdisciplinary research utilizes diverse enzyme assays, chemical synthesis, blood clot formation and digestion assays under
shear, and other novel testing/delivery platforms that include multivalent branched molecules and nanoparticle drug delivery systems. Projects Include: (1) Leveraging multivalency to modulate enzyme activity and improve inhibitor selectivity (nanoparticle
drug delivery and targeting). (2) Ex-vivo flowing models of clot digestion under shear using in-vivo like fluorescently labeled blood
clots from human whole blood. (3) Development of novel fibrinolytic diagnostics tools to assess coagulation state. (4) Mouse models of clot formation/targeting/digestion utilizing intravital microscopy. (5) Study the effects of environmental microplastic exposure
on coagulation/fibrinolysis. Projects are funded both externally and internally.
