Avoiding
predatory journals and “hidden” predatory journals
I'd
like to share some information on predatory journals as I'm sure that many of us have already experienced and are aware in many scientific communities. To protect our valuable work and to enhance Weldon’s reputation among our peer institutions, it is necessary
for us to be very careful in publishing papers. Multiple sources including leading publishers are sending out warning signals about predatory journals and “hidden” predatory journals. Arguably, MDPI, Frontiers, and Hindawi are examples of shady publishing.
Researchers at national universities in Japan are banned from publishing papers in these three journals. I also heard that some R1 research schools and departments in the US negatively recognize papers in such “hidden” predatory journals for PhD defenses and
faculty promotions. Purdue University Libraries is supportive to offer information and resources useful for identifying “hidden” predatory journals. As a researcher, we know that one measure of the quality of work is rigorous peer review (arguably where the
paper is published), even though there is no perfect peer review process. If we experience any shady and questionable review processes, the best practice is to stay away from such journals and publishers. Working with Purdue libraries, we are planning on having
a session for graduate students/postdocs and faculty. Stay tuned.

Abstract: It
is being increasingly recognized that adipocytes are not a homogenous cell population, but rather represent a diverse group of cells with distinct physiological roles. Thermogenic adipocytes are a class of adipocytes that utilize glucose and fatty acids to
generate heat and are critical for core temperature maintenance. Extensive epidemiological evidence has shown that the abundance of thermogenic adipocytes in adult humans is tightly correlated with metabolic health. In this talk I will present data on the
mechanisms by which human thermogenic adipocytes develop from mesenchymal progenitor cells, their transcriptomic features, and data on how we are elucidating their functional role using species-hybrid models.

Abstract: Rotator cuff tendon
(RCT) tears cause chronic shoulder pain and impaired function. RCT repair is typically done through suture repair and allograft extracellular matrix patch augmentation, but re-tear of the fibrotic repair is common. The low cellularity and hierarchical dense
matrix of tendon further impedes regenerative healing due to extended inflammatory stages and slow remodeling. As a result, high retear rates can occur. Tissue engineering works to eliminate these shortcomings. Tendon engineered approaches seek to support
the healing structure with a biomaterial and functional cells (mesenchymal progenitors, tendon fibroblasts) to increase organized matrix deposition and remodeling. Novel engineered approaches are evaluated through specific tendon-related outcomes including
expression of tendon-related genes and development of highly aligned collagen. These outcomes evaluate a small fraction of the tendon phenotype but do not guarantee uniform cell differentiation or a healthy mature tendon phenotype. Hence, initially promising
results can show disappointing long-term results, or complications (e.g., fibrochondrogenesis, fibrosis, metabolic imbalance). Prior work shows promise for engineered tendon development through enrichment of novel biomaterial scaffolds with tendon extracellular
matrix. The overarching goal is to characterize native healthy and diseased RCT through integration of multiomic platforms and then use this new insight to better evaluate novel engineered tendon approaches. Here I will identify how close these engineered
tendons come to mimicking healthy tendons. I will implement unbiased multiomic techniques that, when integrated, completely characterize and integrate outcomes. Together these studies will improve definition of outcomes and increase understanding of engineered
approaches for treating RCT tears.

Abstract: 37.7 million people worldwide are
living with HIV with low-to-middle-income communities (LMICs) disproportionately affected. Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for two-thirds of the population of people living with HIV (PLHIV). Although antiretroviral therapy (ART) has prolonged the life of PLHIV,
treatment success is contingent upon early detection which requires new strategies to detect acute HIV infection. Further, co-infection with Human T- Lymphotropic Virus-1 (HTLV-1) and/or Hepatitis C virus (HCV) in PLHIV are known to accelerate the progression
to AIDS. Unfortunately, existing rapid tests that detect host antibodies are affected by long seroconversions of these infections which allow the viruses to remain undetected long after infection and the persistence of host antibodies after viral clearance.
In contrast, molecular methods based on nucleic acid amplification are suitable for detecting early infections of HIV, HTLV-1, and HCV; however, the high-operational costs of these assays restrict their use in low resource settings. Herein, I will develop
a simple, cost-effective point-of-care (POC) device, detecting HIV, HTLV-1, and HCV from patient’s whole blood sample by combining the multiplex capability of centrifugal microfluidics with isothermal nucleic acid amplification. First, I will develop and optimize
an isothermal nucleic acid amplification, including an internal amplification control (IAC) assay to achieve clinically relevant detection of HIV-1. Next, I will combine both assays with centrifugal microfluidics for high-throughput detection of HIV-1. Finally,
I will develop and optimize parallel isothermal assays detecting HCV, and HTLV-1. The fully integrated platform will enable early screening of at-risk individuals for HIV-1 and HTLV-1 and/or HCV in LMICs.

Abstract:
Pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) are increasingly utilized to investigate early human developmental processes including gastrulation and organogenesis of endoderm-derived pancreatic lineages. Critical for tissue development, the PSC niche is a dynamic environment
consisting of extracellular matrix (ECM) components that guide cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation. However, investigation of the interplay between the PSC niche and organogenesis has been limited to conventional two-dimensional (2D) cell culture
or three-dimensional (3D) platforms requiring use of ill-defined materials (e.g., Matrigel). Furthermore, these systems lack tunability to probe specific qualities of the PSC niche including mechanical properties and biochemical compositions. In this dissertation,
modular and dynamic hydrogels were designed to study PSC and niche interactions during differentiation and pancreatic organogenesis. Specifically, two bioorthogonal chemical reactions, thiol-norbornene photopolymerization and tetrazine-norbornene inverse electron
demand Diels-Alder (iEDDA) reactions were employed to generate gelatin- and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-based hydrogels with spatiotemporally tunable physicochemical properties. Following mechanical characterization of the hydrogels, the multicomponent gelatin-based
hydrogels were assessed for supporting viability and pluripotency of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC), as well as for permitting their trilineage differentiation. Next, fully synthetic PEG-based hydrogels with temporally tunable crosslinking density
were established to probe the effect of matrix mechanics on definitive endoderm differentiation of the hiPSCs. Finally, using single cell transcriptomics, hiPSC-to-pancreatic progenitor cell differentiation was explored in both naturally-derived gelatin-based
hydrogels and synthetic PEG-based hydrogels, with cells differentiated on a 2D surface as a control. Overall, this work demonstrates that culture dimensionality, material compositions, and mechanics profoundly influence hiPSC differentiation and pancreatic
morphogenesis.

Title of presentation: “Pollen-Based Materials Innovation for Sustainable Technologies”
Abstract:
Throughout history, new materials have been the foundation of disruptive technologies. From bronze, paper, and ceramics to steel, polymers, and semiconductors, each material enabled far-reaching advances and defined the era. Seventy years ago, the synthesis
of pure semiconductors as single crystals led to a complete transformation of the electronics industry and sweeping changes in communications, computing, and transportation. Today, inspired by the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – a blueprint
to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all – another new class of materials is emerging—one with both the potential to alleviate environmental burden, provide radically new functions, and to challenge our notion of what constitutes a “material.”
These materials, inspired and co-opted from biology, combine (1) hybrid-composite design, combining disparate building blocks; (2) compartmentalized architecture, encapsulating desirable biomolecules while excluding others; and (3) hierarchical organization.
Together, they enable unique and remarkable combinations of properties, including adaptability, plasticity, multi-functionality, and environmental responsiveness – far beyond those achieved by monolithic materials of the synthetic world. An extraordinary example
is pollen, a discrete mesoscale compartment, which encapsulates, protects, and transports male genetic material in flowering plants enabling the biological imperative of reproduction. In this talk, I will introduce our ongoing efforts to explore the materials
science of pollen and to transform pollen into a valuable commodity to produce pollen-based materials innovation as a sustainable solution to numerous outstanding environmental challenges. Key examples that will be covered include digital printing of shape-morphing
materials, recyclable and reusable paper, and oil-absorbing sponges.
Bio:
Nam-Joon Cho is the MRS-Chair Professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. His research activities focus on biomaterial engineering approaches to solve important biomedical and environmental
problems and to translate these capabilities into practical applications for global health and sustainability. His research team has published over 270 scientific papers in top journals such as Nature Materials, Nature Medicine, Nature Communications, Nature
Protocols, Science Translational Medicine, Science Advances, Advanced Materials, ACS Nano, and the Journal of the American Chemical Society. Dr. Cho’s scientific work has been highlighted by international media organizations such as Reuters, CNBC, and Businessweek,
and has led to licensed technologies in the fields of antiviral medicine, biomaterials, and biotechnology. He is a graduate of Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley. s

Raising A Resilient Scientist Workshop Series

Education): Over the last year I have
interacted with many trainees across the U.S. as part of the NIH Becoming
a Resilient Scientist series.
After carefully considering input from students, postdocs, faculty and program administrators who participated in the program, I have decided to offer a series, RAISING
A RESILIENT SCIENTIST, for
faculty and administrators who mentor students and postdoctoral fellows in the biomedical, behavioral, and social sciences. The
goal of the Raising a Resilient Scientist series is to promote the mental health and well-being of the academic research community by supporting faculty and administrators to develop self-management, relationship-management, and mentoring skills. A variety
of topics will be covered with a specific focus on communication and shared problem-solving to help trainees deal with the inevitable setbacks experienced in high knowledge environments. There will be five units in the series; each unit will consist of a
75-minute lecture, which can be watched in real-time or asynchronously, followed by a 1-hour facilitated discussion with peers. There will be two opportunities for participation in the small groups following each webinar. There is no charge for participation,

The program is a paid early start for URM students with their faculty mentors.

The purpose of the Joe Bourland Graduate Student Travel Award is to
provide travel support to graduate students in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering to conferences as part of their graduate studies to the extent that such support is permitted under University policies. Students benefit tremendously from attending
conferences and presenting their work to peers and experts in their field. Conferences also present an ideal networking opportunity for students to explore research collaborations, potential employment and broaden their knowledge base. Dr. Joe Bourland was
one of the group nicknamed the “Fab 4” to come from Baylor University (along with Dr. Geddes, Dr. Tacker, and Dr. Babbs) in 1974 to begin the Hillenbrand Biomedical Engineering Center. The Center eventually became the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering.

Trailblazers in Engineering (TBE)
are workshops to prepare future trailblazing faculty in engineering
with a focus on preparing outstanding scholars who are also committed to increasing the success of underrepresented communities of engineers. Trailblazers in Engineering Fellows are selected not only for their outstanding scholarly achievements but also for
their potential impact in expanding representation and diversity in engineering.
The workshop will provide Fellows the ability to network with leading faculty in engineering, thought leaders, program managers at key federal funding agencies, Purdue Engineering heads, and of course, each other. Participants will also meet current Trailblazers
and benefit from their inspiring keynote talks.
TBE 2022 will be held in person on Purdue's beautiful West Lafayette, IN campus July 26 - 28, 2022.
