Vanderbilt postdoctoral
recruitment symposium featuring Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science
On April 28-29, 2022, Vanderbilt University will be hosting
the annual Vanderbilt Integrative Training Alliance (VITA) Symposium, a conference focused on biomedical sciences graduate students. Attendees have a unique opportunity to connect with the Vanderbilt community, obtain a long-term mentoring relationship with
a Vanderbilt faculty member, and gain training in scientific communication from the
Alan Alda Center for Communicating
Science.
The event will also feature a keynote address from Vanderbilt postdoc alumna, Dr.
Shaneda Anderson.
This year the conference will be virtual. The complete two day schedule and application can be found here.
While the symposium is open to all, we particularly encourage individuals from backgrounds underrepresented in academia to apply, including but not limited to those who identify as Black, African-American, Latino, Hispanic, Native American, or Pacific Islander,
those who have a disability, first generation college-goers, those from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds, and those underrepresented on the basis of gender identity or expression or sexual orientation.
NRMN Grant Writing
Coaching Groups study - Last cohort - deadline to apply is March 24, 2022!
I am one of the Co-Investigators of this study, based
at the University of Utah, funded through the NIH National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) effort. This cohort, which will the 6th and last, will kick off August 10-12. All of the sessions are conducted virtually. Briefly, participants meet
bi-weekly for 5-6 months in groups of 4-5 with a faculty Coach who has been successful at obtaining research grants and has been trained in the group method. The study is a randomized trial comparing 4 different group process and duration designs. It is not
a typical ‘controlled’ design, where some individuals receive no coaching, since the benefit of grant writing coaching groups has already been established. The deadline to apply for this final round is March, 24.
Participation in the study is open to faculty and advanced
postdoctoral fellows who have not yet received NIH R01-level funding. Participants can be working on NIH K or R-type proposals, or equivalent for other agencies, and will be actively writing their proposals in the August-December, 2022, timeframe. All of

I would like to make you aware of an exciting opportunity
for graduating Biomedical Engineers. The Biomedical Engineer Technical Career Field (TCF) positions were posted to USAjobs.com on February 23, 2022I. The posting can be found on USAJOBS at

It will stay active until March 10, 2022.
The TCF program
is a national workforce development program within the Department of Veterans Affairs, the aim of which is to help replenish technical staff in critically identified positions. Individuals selected follow a formal training plan for two years during which they
are trained, coached, and supervised by a preceptor. Preceptors are selected annually, through an extensive application process, for their technical expertise, commitment to training, and the suitability of their facility as a training location. Selectees
will be required to sign Mobility, Training, and Continued Service Agreements.
Job duties for the Biomedical Engineering TCFs include evaluating medical equipment, managing the medical equipment maintenance program, and coordinating new medical technology implementations. Throughout the training program, the selectee will develop abilities
to effectively support and advance patient care by applying both engineering and managerial skills to healthcare technology. While developing these skills, the selectee will receive assignments to prepare for higher-level management and leadership responsibilities.
Promotion potential exists to the highest levels within the Biomedical (Clinical) Engineering career field. Career advancement can take TCF graduates to all regions of the country and toward numerous healthcare leadership roles.

1 class at this time. Starting March 7, you will be able to register for a second class. You may register for more than 1 workshop. Visiting Scholars may register for classes if space is available after March 7.

On March 7th, from 3:00-4:15PM EST, the Office of Intramural
Training and Education (OITE) will be hosting the fourth part of its Mental Health and Well-being webinar series. The topic this month is Community Wellness. Culture change is never easy and takes work at the personal, group and community level. In this installment
of the OITE Mental Health and Well-Being series we will talk about the intersection of personal and community well-being. We will discuss strategies for promoting well-being in research groups, offices, departments, and programs with a focus on leadership
at all levels. This webinar is open to all NIHers and folks outside the NIH, including students, fellows, staff, and faculty. We hope you will join us! The talk will be recorded and will be accessible within 24-48 hours.

Yale Ciencia Academy For
Professional Development, Due March 18
I am writing
to ask for your help spreading the word about that applications for the Yale
Ciencia Academy (YCA) for Professional Development are
now open. The YCA an NIH-funded initiative to equip doctoral students interested in biological, biomedical or behavioral research and who are in the final 1.5-2 years of their programs with the knowledge, skills, and networks they need to find great postdoctoral
positions that will further their academic interests and career goals. The program supports students who identify as being from an underrepresented background in science, as
defined by the NIH.
The application period closes March 18, 2022, and the program runs from June 2022 to June 2023.
Students can expect the following key benefits:

leaders, and peers from diverse backgrounds

Training from leading experts to
demystify the post-PhD transition and improve planning, mentoring and communication skills

Twice a year, Postdoc Preview awards up to 20 applicants theopportunity to explore the extensive postdoctoral research and training opportunities available at U-M. During a fully-funded, two-day visit, guests will interview with prospective mentors, learn about
funding opportunities, network with current postdocs, and experience Ann Arbor.
