NUTR 59000 Gut Microbiome and Nutrition in Health and Disease

Course Description:
This course explores the intricate relationship between the gut microbiome and nutrition, and their collective impact on human health and disease. Students will
delve into the composition and function of the gut microbiome, understanding how diet influences microbial diversity and activity. Key topics include the role of the gut microbiome in nutrient digestion and absorption, metabolic processes, and its involvement
in various diseases in which microbial imbalance has an etiological link. Students will also become familiar with current analytical and bioinformatic methods for studying the gut microbiome and the potential for prebiotic and probiotic interventions to prevent
or manage diseases.
Prerequisites:
A foundational knowledge of biology and nutrition is recommended.

I want to personally invite you to our Grand Opening event to celebrate the launching of our new Accessible Precision Audiology Research
Center (APARC) at the 16 Tech Innovation District in Indianapolis. This new health-related initiative is launching with support from the Life and Health Sciences Summit that was supported by the Office of Research and the Provost’s Office, and includes researchers
from HHS, Engineering, and Science.
Our new center will provide hearing-health education and outreach to the Indianapolis community and beyond, while recruiting subjects
with diverse racial, socioeconomic, and hearing-health backgrounds with the goal of using the data to improve precision audiology diagnostics through ML and data analytics. We ultimately hope to connect hearing health with other broader health issues (e.g.,
diabetes, cognition, mental health, etc.).
We hope you can join us to view the space and learn more about this initiative via live technology demos and enjoy delicious local
food and drinks (from the AMP). More details below.

Purdue Chemistry Day at the Children's Museum in Indianapolis - Outreach Opportunity!
Participate in Purdue's first
Chemistry Day and lead outreach activities with kids from the Indianapolis area at the
Children's
Museum!
The event will be from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on
Tuesday, November 5. Transportation provided! The bus will leave FRNY at 8:00 AM and return by 1:30 PM.
There is a required on-campus planning meeting on Tuesday, October 22, 11:30 am—1:30 pm in DLR 221 (lunch will be served!).
Don Reifler, the museum's Science Programs Manager, will discuss outreach and informal education with you. Pairs of volunteers will be given a kit with their Chemistry Day activity to familiarize themselves with it and ask any questions.
Chemistry Day Activities (the museum will supply all materials)

Lava Lamp (a vinegar and baking soda reaction with oil and water causing a lava lamp-like effect)
·
Density Column (exploring a pre-made density column in a jar)
·
Cabbage pH indicator (safe exploration of acids and bases)
·
Blue Bottle (a simple, repeatable, and dramatic color change oxidation reaction)
·
Magic Sand (exploring hydrophobic sand)
·
Slime (making slime, of course)
·
Invisible Ink (using grape juice concentrate and a baking soda/water solution)
·
Chromatography (separating pigments in different marker colors)
·
Magic Milk (putting food coloring in milk and using soap to break the fat micelles and allow the colors to flow)
·
Chemistry Makes Scents (experiencing different smells from molecules with identical structure but opposite chirality)
