HEAD UPDATE

Hello everyone - Today marks the beginning of finals week and a time of year where we both look ahead and reflect on the previous academic year.  It is also an important time for many faiths and cultures with important events and dates, including Eid al-Fitr that marks the end of Ramadan today, and in recent weeks, the celebrations of Passover and Easter.  In my own reflections of the past academic year, I’ve truly enjoyed learning and serving in my new role in support of our diverse and growing community, and I’ve really enjoyed the additional opportunities to get to know many of you.  I’ve enjoyed learning from you and listening to your stories as I think about ways to continually improve the Weldon School as a critical part of your training and experience.  I’ve also had a recent opportunity to share a bit more about my story (including the ups and downs, the challenges, doubts, and joys) and importantly the roles of mentors in shaping each one of us.  Some of my story is available at https://stories.purdue.edu/a-multidimensional-mentor/  but it is not unique.  We celebrated three outstanding mentors last week who have each been awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student Mentor awards from the past three years - Dr. Dianne Little (2022), Dr. Joseph Rispoli (2021), and Dr. Vitaliy Rayz (2020).   These mentors also shared words and sentiments that highlight their passion for training and success of BME students.  We are happy that we are a part of your story! Thanks for being a Boilermaker and part of this big team!

The email below states all of the information about grading for both courses and your research students (both grad and undergraduate) for the semester.  Grade entry is already open and ends at 5 p.m. May 10th.


Faculty at West Lafayette not meeting the submission deadline for their reporting window will be required to submit via the Grade change workflow found in their myPurdue portal.

2.       Now is the time to ensure they are up to date on the required certifications that will affect their ability to submit grades.

3.       Final Grade submission windows for Spring 2022.

a.       Grade entry begins at 8 a.m. April 22 and ends at 5 p.m. May 10th.

b.       How to enter final grades in myPurdue.

c.       How to enter final grades using BrightSpace video. Document attached.

d.       For late grades, you can use Grade Change Workflow.

4.       Important information regarding the use of Incompletes.

a.       Please share the attached document with faculty as a refresher to Final Grade submission and appropriate use of Incomplete grades.

Trailblazers in Engineering (TBE) are workshops to prepare future trailblazing faculty in engineering with a focus on preparing outstanding scholars who are also committed to increasing the success of underrepresented communities of engineers. Fellows will network with leading faculty in engineering, thought leaders, program managers at key federal funding agencies, Purdue Engineering heads, and of course, each other. Participants will also meet current Trailblazers and benefit from their inspiring keynote talks. TBE 2022 will be held in person on Purdue's beautiful West Lafayette, IN campus July 26 - 28, 2022.

Abstract:  Over 150 years since Claude Bernard coined the evocative phrase, "milieu intérieur", to draw attention to a deep mystery in the natural world, fundamental questions remain open about how the simplest living system, a bacterial cell, maintains homeostasis of its best studied attribute, cell size. In this preliminary work towards dissertation, I will address how life shapes time in a bacterial cell, and discuss the interplay between homeostasis and adaptation in this context. First, I will first establish that stochastic intergenerational bacterial cell size homeostasis is maintained under constant growth conditions for non interacting cells, using our high-precision data on growth and division of individual C. crescentus cells using our SChemostat technology. Next, the emergent simplicities or scaling laws revealed by these data, and their mechanistic implications. Following this, the questions, approaches and challenges in the extension to time-varying growth conditions, other microorganisms, and spatially patterned arrangement of cells, and possible new emergent simplicities.

Raising A Resilient Scientist Workshop Series

(Message from Sharon Milgram, Director, NIH Office of Intramural Training & Education): Over the last year I have interacted with many trainees across the U.S. as part of the NIH Becoming a Resilient Scientist series. After carefully considering input from students, postdocs, faculty and program administrators who participated in the program, I have decided to offer a series, RAISING A RESILIENT SCIENTIST, for faculty and administrators who mentor students and postdoctoral fellows in the biomedical, behavioral, and social sciences. The goal of the Raising a Resilient Scientist series is to promote the mental health and well-being of the academic research community by supporting faculty and administrators to develop self-management, relationship-management, and mentoring skills. A variety of topics will be covered with a specific focus on communication and shared problem-solving to help trainees deal with the inevitable setbacks experienced in high knowledge environments.  There will be five units in the series; each unit will consist of a 75-minute lecture, which can be watched in real-time or asynchronously, followed by a 1-hour facilitated discussion with peers. There will be two opportunities for participation in the small groups following each webinar. There is no charge for participation, but advanced registration is required. Participants will also meet current Trailblazers and benefit from their inspiring keynote talks.

TBE 2022 will be held in person on Purdue's beautiful West Lafayette, IN campus July 26 - 28, 2022.

Reasons to Attend 

  1. Network with leading trailblazing faculty in engineering, thought leaders, program managers at key federal funding agencies, Purdue Engineering heads, and scientists who will present keynote speeches and talks throughout the program.
  2. Gain insight into what academic success will look like post-pandemic.
  3. Participate in panel discussions.
  4. Meet program managers from the National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, National Institutes of Health and others; receive advice on your proposals; and participate in a poster session to pitch your research and teaching plans and get feedback from would-be employers.
  5. Attend the "Success Strategies for New Faculty Members" workshop presented by internationally recognized experts in faculty development, Drs. Richard Felder and Rebecca Brent.
  6. For non-Purdue Fellows, we are reimbursing up to $800.00 per Economy flight and transportation (cab fare, shuttle, mileage, and/or parking to/from Purdue). In addition, we will provide two days of per diem for travel days of July 25 & 28.
