Postdoc Fellowship Opportunity for all Disciplines – Branco Weiss Fellowship

The Branco Weiss Fellowship

Summary

Branco Weiss, a renowned Swiss entrepreneur and supporter of science, has dedicated nearly his entire fortune to supporting exceptional postdoctoral researchers with a generous 5-year grant (more information available at https://brancoweissfellowship.org). Since 2002, the Branco Weiss Fellowship – Society in Science has supported more than 150 early-career researchers. Fellows are free to carry out their projects at any academic institution worldwide, allowing them to choose the environment that best suits their research needs. The fellowship is open to researchers at postdoctoral level in all disciplines (including natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and humanities).

Eligibility

You are eligible for the 2025 intake if:

· You officially hold a PhD on January 15, 2025

· You have obtained your PhD a maximum of five years prior to January 15, 2025

· You do not hold/have not held a faculty-equivalent position (e.g. assistant professor or lecturer)

· Your project departs from the mainstream of research in your discipline

· You have a record of outstanding scientific achievement

· You demonstrate in the proposal a willingness to engage in a dialog on relevant social, cultural, political or economic issues beyond the frontiers of your particular discipline

Please note that we typically do not fund mainstream research projects that could also be funded by other scientific organizations.

Duration
Research projects should be conceived to last five years.

The first two and a half years of a project are called the pioneer phase. Before the end of the second year, a site visit will take place and a review will be conducted. At this point, the project, its continued originality, and the productivity of the fellow will be evaluated. If the results of the evaluation and site visit are satisfactory, the fellow enters the exploitation phase for the remaining two and a half years of the fellowship.

Branco Weiss Fellows are encouraged to seek faculty positions during their exploitation phase. Fellows can start a faculty position/professorship after the first year of the fellowship. Assuming an academic position will not result in termination of the fellowship.

Funding
A Branco Weiss Fellowship amounts to max. CHF 600,000 (currently $678,560 US) for up to five years. It may be used to cover all legitimate costs of research (i.e. salary and/or equipment, travel expenses, consumables, personnel, etc.).

· Letter of motivation including a statement explaining why your research differs from the mainstream (max. 1 page)

· Your proposed research project (max. 5 pages, including abstract, timelines, tentative milestones and references)

· Your CV (max. 4 pages)

· An invitation letter by your prospective host, stating why you are invited to the host group and why your research project is supported

· Copies of your three best publications (no doctoral theses, no books, only peer-reviewed journal articles or individual book chapters)

· 5 reviewer suggestions (to be entered directly in the online application)

Biomedical Data Science Innovation Lab-Now Accepting Applications!

On behalf of the integrated Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia (iTHRIV), the Biomedical Data Science Innovation Lab and Seminar Series is now accepting applications for the 2025 event!

The theme for this year is “Quantitative Approaches in Spatial Multi-Omics for Guiding Personalized Medicine” and the in-person lab will be June 16 - 20, 2025 in Nashville, Tennessee. Selected candidates will have their travel and lodging expenses fully covered, with the expectation that they engage in all virtual microlabs and remain for the entire five-day event in June 2025.

The goal of the 2025 Biomedical Data Science Innovation Lab (BDSIL) is to foster the formation of new interdisciplinary collaborations to generate creative strategies focused on the use of data science approaches in spatial multi-omics, particularly as applied to understanding cancer and rare diseases.

This is a great opportunity for early career researchers (biomedical researchers and / or data science researchers) to build networks and learn! The virtual Seminar Series open to all – See the flyer for details of upcoming topics.

Vanderbilt Biomaterials Day 2025: Register by January 3rd!

My name is Zach Lamantia and I am a BME graduate student at Vanderbilt University and the Secretary of the Vanderbilt Chapter of Society For Biomaterials (SFB). We would like to invite you to the 2025 Mid-South Regional Biomaterials Day, hosted at Vanderbilt University! This conference's theme will be Biomaterials at All Scales: Nano, Micro, and Macro. All researchers who have an interest in biomaterials are invited to register to attend and present a poster. To do so, please complete this Google form. Abstract submissions are open until Friday, January 3rd, 2025. Those who register for the event or submit an abstract before the deadline will be entered into a raffle we will have on the day of the event. This raffle will include travel awards!

The Biomaterials Day will be held on Friday, March 28th, 2025, at the Student Life Center at Vanderbilt University. For more information about the conference, we have set up this website. Science/Engineering Postdoc Fellowship Opportunity for US Citizens

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine maintain a database of more than 300 research opportunities and administer postdoctoral and senior fellowship awards at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), and the U.S. Space Force (USSF) under the Air Force Science & Technology Fellowship Program (AF STFP).

We are seeking highly qualified candidates who are U.S. citizens and hold, or anticipate earning, a doctorate in a variety of fields of science or engineering. BOTH PhD Candidates (must hold degree before starting the fellowship) and postdocs with 5 or less years since PhD attainment are eligible.

Application deadline dates (four annual review cycles):

· February 1*

· May 1

· August 1

· November 1

*If a deadline falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the deadline is moved to the next business day. 

Research Fellows have the opportunity to:

· Conduct independent research in an area compatible with the interests of the Air Force laboratories

· Devote full-time effort to research and publication

· Access the excellent and often unique Air Force research facilities

· Collaborate with leading scientists and engineers

Award benefits include:

· Base stipend starting at $95,000/year; may be higher based on experience

· Health insurance (including dental and vision)

· Relocation assistance for Research Fellows who will be on tenure for at least six months and who at the time of award reside more than 50 miles from the host laboratory

BME COVID Vaccine Clinic – Dec. 11^th

BME GSA is pleased to announce that we will be hosting another vaccine clinic, this one for the latest COVID booster. This clinic will be hosted on Wednesday 12/11/24 in MJIS 2001 from 1:00-2:30 pm and BME GSA will be set up outside the room if you have any questions. All students, graduate students, faculty, and staff are welcome to come and get their vaccines.
