Hello- This week I get the privilege to introduce our new Senior Program Assistant Lee Hua Chiang (chiang47@purdue.edu) to BME.  She starts March 1st and will be in the front office of 3001.  She comes with 6 years of experience in program admin and will be supporting operations, meetings, events, CTSI, heads office scheduling, and provide admin support for the Purdue Engineering Initiative in Engineering in Medicine.  Please be sure to introduce yourself and welcome her to the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering.  Also, this week- be sure to check out the attachments and updates from the BME DEI committee.

Tues., March 15 – MJIS air handling shutdown, beginning at 7:30 AM and lasting until approx. 3:00 PM for preventative  maintenance of the building’s air systems. This includes air ventilation supplies to all public, classroom and research areas, including chemical fume hoods. There should be NO  chemicals used anywhere! All chemical fume hood activity should terminate by 5 PM Monday March 14th. You must make sure all chemical containers are sealed at that time. Chemical fume hoods will have notices posted - do not resume activity until BME staff have verified that work is complete, and have removed postings.

The Graduate School will be hosting two Graduate Faculty Mentoring Workshops in West Lafayette this spring. Deadline for registration is Monday, February 28, 2022. The first will be on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; and the second will be on Thursday, March 10, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Both workshops will be held at the Stewart Center in Room 202 unless we have to move to virtual. Additional workshops (including workshops on regional campuses) will not be held until September 2022.

 

 

The workshop provides an overview to the policies, procedures and expectations associated with mentoring graduate students at Purdue University. Participation in the workshop is required for any faculty member who wishes to seek appointment to the Graduate Faculty at Purdue University.

 

Historically it has been the practice of the Graduate School to require faculty new to Purdue to attend a Graduate Faculty Mentoring Workshop before they could obtain graduate faculty status. While a practice, it is not “policy” so we will not hold up faculty appointments due to logistics of when the workshops are offered. This does not negate the request for faculty new to Purdue to attend one of the new faculty workshops, but it does mean the Graduate School will not hold an appointment request based on workshop completion

 

In addition to attending one of these two workshops, faculty who wish to hold a position as a regular member of the Graduate Faculty must also be recommended by their unit and be a tenure-track or voting status faculty member. This process must be initiated in the Graduate School Database, and is typically done by the department graduate contact. Appointment to the graduate faculty permits a faculty member to teach graduate-level courses, to serve on graduate student advisory committees, and to chair or co-chair master’s and Ph.D. committees. The level of appointment is dependent upon the faculty member’s position, rank and credentials.

 

Graduate coordinators and contacts - Please provide faculty members the instructions below to register online. I will also still accept email registrations if there are any complications but my preference would be to direct them to use the electronic system. It is very important that participants arrive on time and do not leave early. Missing part of the presentation could cause their attendance to not count toward fulfilling the requirement needed to advise students or become a regular faculty member. Please make sure that he registering faculty members are aware of this.

Abstract: Temporal processing and temporal coherence processing are fundamental components of auditory processing and the focus of the work in this thesis. Cortical temporal processing in particular is understudied in humans. This dissertation makes three contributions that help characterize auditory temporal processing, and its relationship to auditory perception in humans. Experiment 1 develops a novel systems identification approach utilizing modified maximum length sequences (m-seq) to robustly measure cortical temporal processing noninvasively. Using this technique, it is found that cortex's ability to track dynamic spatial auditory cues can explain ability to utilize dynamic binaural information to do a spatial unmasking task. This result combined with behavioral data demonstrating FM tracking extends out to similar rates as spatial tracking demonstrates how auditory tracking broadly is constrained by the temporal properties of late areas of cortex. Experiment 2 develops a novel measure of temporal processing, called the modulation temporal response function (mod-TRF), which can separate the underlying sources contributing to modulation processing along the auditory system from short, middle, and late latency regions. The mod-TRF has a robust SNR at the individual level giving it the potential to become an ubiquitous tool to assess temporal processing and auditory activity generally across individuals. The utility of the mod-TRF is demonstrated by evaluating how attention affects different sources along the auditory pathway differently. Other studies utilizing the mod-TRF could explore how temporal processing in early and late areas of the auditory system changes with aging, hearing loss, musicianship, and neuropsychiatric disorders. Experiment 3 establishes a novel physiological measure of across channel temporal coherence processing to measure auditory binding ability across individuals. It  is demonstrated how this novel temporal coherence measure can explain performance at a behavioral temporal coherence detection task, speech-in-noise task, and comodulation masking release. Lastly, it is explored how social and communicative features in individuals, measured via the Autism Quotient, align with differences in auditory ability at various tasks.

Raising A Resilient Scientist Workshop Series

(Message from Sharon Milgram, Director, NIH Office of Intramural Training & Education): Over the last year I have interacted with many trainees across the U.S. as part of the NIH Becoming a Resilient Scientist series. After carefully considering input from students, postdocs, faculty and program administrators who participated in the program, I have decided to offer a series, RAISING A RESILIENT SCIENTIST, for faculty and administrators who mentor students and postdoctoral fellows in the biomedical, behavioral, and social sciences. The goal of the Raising a Resilient Scientist series is to promote the mental health and well-being of the academic research community by supporting faculty and administrators to develop self-management, relationship-management, and mentoring skills. A variety of topics will be covered with a specific focus on communication and shared problem-solving to help trainees deal with the inevitable setbacks experienced in high knowledge environments.  There will be five units in the series; each unit will consist of a 75-minute lecture, which can be watched in real-time or asynchronously, followed by a 1-hour facilitated discussion with peers. There will be two opportunities for participation in the small groups following each webinar. There is no charge for participation, but advanced registration is required. Abstract: The Anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, of the knee is a soft tissue structure comprised of two main bundles of hierarchical collagenous structures. As with all soft tissue, the ACL is extremely difficult to mechanically test, and determining its non-linear, anisotropic mechanical response has remained elusive. Yet, obtaining the mechanical properties of the ACL is exceedingly clinically relevant to the design of better replacement grafts for torn ACLs or to prevent ACL tears in the first place. This talk will focus on our recent efforts to characterize the ACL response utilizing full-field displacement measurement techniques that offer more accurate, repeatable, and comprehensive experimental data than traditional testing methods. We've pioneered full-volume characterization techniques that provide much needed insight into the inaccuracies associated with many current experimental protocols and also the shortcomings of some popular constitutive models in capturing the full 3D response of the ACL. I will describe how we use these data to develop an ACL constitutive model for implementation into computational models of the knee during regular gait and under impact loading simulations. Accurate computational models of the knee such as ours may one day be used to guide clinical practice to intervene to prevent an ACL injury or to determine the best course of action to repair an injury.

Biography: Professor Ellen M Arruda is the Tim Manganello / BorgWarner Department Chair and Maria Comninou Collegiate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. She also holds appointments in Biomedical Engineering and in Macromolecular Science and Engineering. She received her BS and MS degrees from Penn State and her PhD from MIT. She joined the UM faculty in 1992. 

Professor Arruda teaches and conducts research in the areas of theoretical and experimental mechanics of macromolecular materials, including polymers, elastomers, composites, soft tissues and proteins. Her research programs include experimental characterization and analytical and computational modeling of soft materials, including native and engineered tissues. Her polymer mechanics work has focused on the mechanics of these highly strain rate and temperature dependent materials with emphasis on the relationships among the structures at various length scales to the deformation mechanisms of those structures to predict the mechanical responses. More recently she has pioneered efforts to characterize the complex mechanical responses of soft tissues such as ligaments and tendons via full-volumetric-field methods.

What is 3MT?  Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition that helps graduate students develop academic, presentation, and research communication skills so that they can effectively explain their research to a non-specialist audience. During each competition, graduate students will have three minutes to present a compelling discussion on their research topic, including its significance and relevance, to the general public. This is a fast-paced competition where the top 10 finalists compete by summarizing their two to three-plus years of research in only three minutes with only one slide.  There are three cash awards for this competition, including $2,000 for first-place, $1,000 for second place, and $1,000 for the People’s Choice Award winner. The first-place winner will also be invited to compete in the Midwestern Association of Graduate School’s (MAGS) annual 3MT competition.

BME Faculty and Faculty with labs in MJIS:  It is again time for us to complete our ISP (Integrated Safety Plan) documentation for REM. It covers all BME labs and occupied space in MJIS.  We also need to cover areas in other buildings assigned to BME Faculty.  Most of the forms can be completed by anyone who regularly works in your lab but the documents must be signed by the PI.  If you are new to this process or need help in any way, please contact Susan Hardy or me, we are glad to help.

Please start with item 1, The ISP self-audit checklist these need to be returned to Susan or me by Monday, March 7.  Remaining items should be completed by Monday, March 14. This schedule will allow us to arrange the walkthrough (inspection of facilities and documentation) for early December.  Susan and I will be glad to help you complete the process and answer questions to make it as painless as possible.

Please complete this step as soon as possible; we need to have these reviewed by REM before we can schedule our final walk through later in March.

This brief review is typically done in lab meetings; be sure undergrads working in the lab are included. Attendance record form should be signed by everyone in attendance.   All of the research labs in MJIS are covered by the Purdue Chemical Hygiene Plan. The  hazard assessment and PPE requirements are best described in the CHP document, starting on Pg. 61.

Abstract: “Miniaturization of technologies to micro and nanoscale offers numerous advantages for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. When compared to their macroscale counterparts, micro and nanosystems are more portable, less invasive and less costly. These systems can facilitate rapid, sensitive and high throughput detection of abnormalities, help track disease progression, reduce sample consumption and improve therapeutic efficacy of drug delivery while decreasing toxicity. Thus, there is clearly a critical need to create innovative micro and nanoscale tools that can open up new possibilities in detection and treatment of diseases. The overall objective of this work is to develop novel natural and synthetic polymer-based micro and nanotechnologies that could help enhance diagnostic and therapeutic patient outcomes. First, we developed a stable and echogenic nanoparticle ultrasound contrast agent for potential applications in diagnostic extravascular tumor imaging and targeted therapies. Then, we created a polymer blend microparticle-based abuse-deterrent formulation to deter smoking of common prescription opioids. Our next step is to design a tumbling magnetic microrobot system with diagnostic capabilities for applications in cancer precision diagnostics.”

 

Seminar for Neurotrauma and Diseases

Join the Center for Paralysis Research as we host the Spring 2022 installment of the Seminar for Neurotrauma and Diseases, sponsored by Plexon Neurotechnology Systems! Remaining seminars this semester are on March 9, March 23, April 6, and April 20, all from 4:00 PM-5:00 PM EST on Zoom.

 

This neurotrauma-focused seminar will host speakers from Purdue, Harvard, and Carnegie Mellon universities. Distinguished experts in their respective fields will present on a variety of neurobiology- and SCI/TBI-related topics, sharing their unique focuses and cutting-edge research. Virtual Judges needed for the 2022 Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair, March 9-21

Hello! Would you be willing to act as a virtual judge at the 2022 Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair? If you are receiving this message, it means you are eligible to volunteer as a judge in the 2022 Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair in March 2022. This year, we have over 200 young experimentalists (5-12 graders) eagerly awaiting a chance to share their projects with you. The fair is only a few weeks away, so right now they are working hard on their projects. Students are going the extra mile this year to prepare virtual presentations, and having many judges from a variety of disciplines helps us award prizes most fairly to deserving projects. That’s where you come in.

 

Students will be submitting their work in a brief, 7-10 slide powerpoint, along with a 30 second introduction and optional narration. If you sign up to judge you will be assigned about 10 projects to score, which should take 2-3 hours at most, and will need to submit feedback through a google form. Judging will occur in two sets based on age group, and you may participate in either one or both sets according to your availability. The judging materials are made available on the morning of the first day, and we ask that you submit your responses by midnight on the final day. The dates for judging rounds are as follows: Senior (grades 9-12): March 9-18; Junior (grades 5-8): March 9-21

WOMEN’S GLOBAL HEALTH INSTITUTE  &  THE CATHERINE PEACHEY FUND  Request for Proposals on Breast Cancer Research 

Proposal Deadline: March 21, 2022 

Funds Available: $15,000  

The Purdue Women’s Global Health Institute (WGHI) together with the Catherine Peachey Fund are pleased to announce a request for proposals of outstanding scientific merit for research focused on breast cancer.  Proposals from a variety of disciplines, proposals addressing prevention and early detection, or proposals having potential collaborations with clinicians or other collaborations outside Purdue are welcome. The funded project is expected to gather preliminary data to submit competitive applications to external funding agencies, or to seek support from an outside organization (e.g. companies, foundations, etc.) for continuation of the research.  

Funding:  The research team may request up to $15,000.  

Eligibility:  The PIs must be tenured/tenure-track, research, or clinical faculty at or above the assistant professor rank on the West Lafayette campus of Purdue University.  

 

2022 Graduate School Mentoring Award for Graduate Students (applications due Friday, March 25)

The Council of Graduate Schools defines mentoring as: “… a more senior individual who provides career and psychosocial support to a junior member of a given organization. Recently, mentors have been found to exist laterally, virtually, among peers, and with individuals outside of the professional context. Mentorships center on an emotional commitment, which focuses on the protégé’s personal and professional growth. “

 

The Graduate School wants to acknowledge the essential role graduate students play in our research, teaching, and engagement missions at Purdue University. If you work with a graduate student that has made a difference in your academic career and models the attributes of what we think great mentors should be, please consider encouraging them to apply for this award. Graduate students dedicate a great deal of time and energy in mentoring other colleagues, and undergraduates whether in the lab, field, or classroom. If you feel you have contributed to excellence in mentoring consider applying for this award.

 

Applicants should assemble the following in one PDF document in the following order:

1.             A curriculum vita.

2.             A mentoring statement including your mentoring philosophy, commitment to mentoring and accomplishments in the area of mentoring (maximum of 500 words).

3.             One letter of support from mentees, advisor, or another staff member who has first-hand knowledge of your excellence in mentoring. Letter can be signed by multiple individuals. There can only be one letter of support.

The Graduate School wants to acknowledge the essential role postdoctoral trainees play in our research, teaching, and engagement missions here at Purdue University. If you work with a postdoc that has made a difference in your academic career and models the attributes of what we think great mentors should be, please consider nominating them for this inaugural award. Postdocs dedicate a great deal of time and energy in mentoring other postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduates whether this is in the lab, field, or classroom. Anyone can nominate a postdoc for this award (i.e., graduate students, undergraduates, staff, faculty, or other postdocs). Please notice that the process for the postdoc award is different from the graduate student award. Please follow all directions given below.

 

If you would like to nominate someone, write a nomination letter that gives an example (or many) of how this postdoc has impacted you or others as a mentor. Mentoring can be related to research design and analysis, career and professional advice, or personal guidance. Please include the department(s) along with the program, lab group, or center in which they work. Submissions should be in a letter of 250-500 words and can be submitted by students, postdocs, faculty or staff. Collaboration on letters is welcome.

 

The nominated postdoc will be required to submit a mentorship statement that that describes their roles and commitment to serving as a mentor in 500 words or less, which can be sent to Lisa at lnielse@purdue or submitted along with the nomination letter before the nomination deadline. Vanderbilt Integrative Training Alliance (VITA) Symposium, April 28-29 On April 28-29th, Vanderbilt University will be hosting the annual Vanderbilt Integrative Training Alliance (VITA) Symposium, a conference focused on biomedical sciences graduate students. Attendees have a unique opportunity to connect with the Vanderbilt community, obtain a long-term mentoring relationship with a Vanderbilt faculty member, and gain training in scientific communication. The event will also feature a keynote address from Vanderbilt postdoc alumna, Dr. Shaneda Anderson. This year the conference will be virtual. The complete two day schedule can be found here. While the symposium is open to all, we particularly encourage individuals from backgrounds underrepresented in academia to apply, including but not limited to those who identify as Black, African-American, Latino, Hispanic, Native American, or Pacific Islander, those who have a disability, first generation college-goers, those from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds, and those underrepresented on the basis of gender identity or expression or sexual orientation.
