Grad School Fall Blitz - Industry Career Symposium

The Graduate School’s annual Fall Blitz event will take place on Tuesday, October 10^th (during fall break) from 9:30 am – 4:30 pm. This year’s event will feature Dr. Jennifer Polk, founder of “From PhD to Life.“ Dr. Polk offers career coaching specifically geared toward the needs of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. This event is free and will be held virtually through the Zoom platform. Please see the list of sessions and the accompanying descriptions below.

How to Chart Your Career Next Steps Even If You Have No Idea What You Want to (or Can) Do

· Challenge prevalent misconceptions about diverse job markets and career paths.

How to Win at Job Interviews Even If You Hate Talking About Yourself

· Explain the value of employing the SOART and STARLnG methods to respond to behavioral interview questions.

· Practice (in writing) crafting concise and impactful interview responses using the suggested storytelling methods.

· Develop answers to the most common non-behavioral interview questions to start strong and leaving a lasting positive impression.

Neil Armstrong Distinguished Visiting Professor: Marcus Weldon - Final Visit

Marcus Weldon, formerly the Corporate Chief Technology Officer for Nokia and President of Bell Labs, will be presenting a seminar on Tuesday, 9/26 at 10 AM in MSEE 190 and via Zoom.

The Age of Human Augmentation and the Next Industrial Revolution: This final lecture in the series will build on the preceding two lectures and examine the types of roles that will be most changed in the new productivity era. We will also look at a number of different examples of industries that are leading this transformation. Last, we will consider the roles that different innovation organizations could play and contemplate the need for a new innovation vehicle to provide the maximum value to the largest cross-section of industries.

Industry Connect Program for Medical Technologies, Oct 9-Oct 10

The NSF I-Corps Hub Great Lakes is offering an Industry Connect Program, on Oct 9-Oct 10 in Minneapolis for attendees participating in the Medical Design and Manufacturing Conference, MD&M Conference. The primary goal of the Industry Connect workshop is to provide teams with essential networking and customer discovery skills on how to introduce themselves, talk to technology decision-makers, set up follow-up meetings, acquire feedback, and identify key milestones, etc. Teams then participate in a tradeshow (MD&M Conference) to apply the skills they have acquired.

The hub is also offering a Medical Jumpstart Workshop, Sept 29-Nov 17 (offered virtually) to teams exploring the commercial viability of their Medical-based innovation idea. This course is for faculty, researchers, and students with Medical-based ideas or Intellectual Property and a strong interest in commercializing their technology. Teams participating in this workshop will receive funding up to $1000/team for Customer Discovery purposes. The funding can also be used to participate in the Industry Connect Program.
