Program Qualifications:

- Outstanding Ph.D. graduates with significant leadership experience and technical depth in engineering, life sciences, or natural sciences fields:

o Mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, biology, and related fields

- Early-stage career (less than 3 years of industry or postdoc experience outside the pursuit of a degree)

- Willingness and ability to relocate to different geographic locations

- To qualify for this position, you must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction to duration.

The Graduate School’s Office of Professional Development is collaborating with the Center for Advocacy, Response & Education (CARE) to offer three free workshops for graduate students and postdocs! These workshops will be offered fully online and facilitated by a CARE staff member. You can learn more about each workshop below.

Boiler Up & Intervene

January 30 | 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm | Zoom

Bystander intervention is an evidence-based strategy for preventing interpersonal violence. This workshop is designed to educate students about recognizing an unsafe situation, the different methods for safe intervention, and how to identify and mitigate the barriers that may prevent them from intervening in situations they determine to be unsafe.

CARE-ing Support: Responding to Disclosures of Interpersonal Violence

February 6 | 11:00 am – 12:00 pm | Zoom

Research shows that students are more likely to disclose experiences of interpersonal violence to informal sources, like their peers. This workshop is intended to educate the students about how to respond to peer disclosures of interpersonal violence.

Power & Control

March 7 | 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm | Zoom

Interpersonal violence is a complex problem that has directly or indirectly impacted everyone at some point. This workshop is designed to increase students understanding of how power and control dynamics influence interpersonal violence and the barriers in breaking the patterns of violent behaviors within relationships.

A brief overview of the services offered at CARE will be presented during each session!

Call for Nominations | 2023 Graduate School Mentoring Award for Graduate Students

The Graduate School wants to acknowledge graduate students' essential role in our research, teaching, and engagement missions at Purdue through their mentoring work. If you work with a graduate student that has made a difference in your academic career and models the attributes of what we think great mentors should be, please consider encouraging them to apply for this award! Our graduate students dedicate a great deal of their time and energy to mentoring other colleagues and undergraduates, whether in the lab, field, or classroom.

If you feel you have contributed to excellence in mentoring, consider applying for this award.

Applicants should assemble the following in one PDF document in the following order:

1. A curriculum vita

2. A mentoring statement including your mentoring philosophy, commitment to mentoring, and accomplishments in mentoring (maximum of 500 words)

3. One letter of support from mentees, advisors, or another staff member who has first-hand knowledge of your excellence in mentoring (multiple individuals can sign the letter, but there can only be one letter of support)

Packets should be submitted to Stephen McBride (mcbrid44@purdue.edu) by 5:00pm on Wednesday, March 8, 2023. One nominee from the College of Engineering will be selected and forwarded to the University. The University-level winner will be announced on April 15th and will receive an award of $1,500 and a plaque.

NIH Summer Internship Program Accepting Applications until March 1^st

Summer programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provide an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research (At the NIH "biomedical research" includes everything from behavioral and social sciences, through biology and chemistry, to physics, mathematical modeling, computational biology, and biostatistics). To increase your chances of being offered a position, please do four things:

1. Watch the Applying Successfully to the NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP) Video.

2. Read the SIP FAQs carefully.

3. Read our suggestions for creating a successful SIP application.

4. After submitting your application, if you applied to the General SIP Program, contact NIH investigators with whom you would like to work and explain why you would be a good addition to their groups. (IMPORTANT NOTE: applicants to SIP subprograms should NOT contact investigators.) You can identify NIH investigators with projects that interest you by searching the NIH Intramural Annual Reports. Use the text search feature to find project descriptions that contain the keywords you enter. You can also visit the NIH Intramural Research Program website for a list of investigators organized by scientific focus area. Mental Health and Well-being Series for Biomedical Researchers. Part 4: Perfectionism

We have all received messages that promote perfectionism; however, perfectionism is linked to poorer mental health outcomes, including increased feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. And yet, it continues to be an ever-present part of people’s identity, especially those working within the high stress environment of biomedical research. In this webinar we will define perfectionism and better understand the toll it takes on our lives, explore the contributing factors that perpetuate it, and identify strategies to cultivate a healthy striving mindset. The healthy striving mindset serves an alternative to the impossibility of perfectionism which is eroding our mental health and our resilience. Immediately following the 1-hour webinar will be a 45-minute small group discussion led by a trained facilitator. There will also be an hour-long supplemental session on February 16^th focused on growth mindset, a set of skills necessary to work toward interrupting unhelpful patterned responses of perfectionism.

The webinar will run 3:00-4:00pm EST and will be followed by small discussion groups facilitated by an OITE wellness advisor from 4:05-4:50pm EST. This series is open to all NIHers and folks outside the NIH, including students, fellows, staff, and faculty. We hope you will join us!
