Graduate Course in Data Science, Spring 2026

No previous programming experience is assumed or required

Computational skills are necessary for a career in modern science. Electronic resources and high-throughput technologies are transforming biology; becoming a “power user” of these resources is essential. Unfortunately, such resources are often incomplete (requiring various sources to be combined), massive (making it difficult to find the specific information one is seeking), or in the wrong format (making them incompatible with other software). 

While not every scientist needs to develop their own applications, dealing with big data and modern approaches to data analysis frequently requires the use of scripts to manipulate large datasets. Languages such as Python and R are the most widely used scripting languages in life sciences today.

 

While Practical Biocomputing is not a "bioinformatics" course per se, many of the examples are drawn from this field – The course is intended to give you the skill and experience needed to acquire, clean, and manipulate essential data, including

·         How to automate analyses

·         How to transform data between formats needed for software packages

·         How to use scripts to find and retrieve data from electronic sources

·          How to create internet robots to automatically retrieve and integrate data

·         Basic principles of relational databases and how to integrate database analyses with calculations

·         How to create and manage pipelines and workflow for running complex series of software

·         to create programs to automate analyses

·         to use python transform data between formats needed for software packages

·         to create scripts to find and retrieve data from electronic sources

·          to create internet robots to automatically retrieve and integrate data

·         to create simple relational databases and integrate database analyses with calculations using SQL and Python

·         to create and manage pipelines and workflow for running complex series of software

 

Syllabus (approximate):

· Week 1 – Introduction to Python: variable types, mathematical and logical operators, sorting lists

· Week 2 – definition of truth, logical tests, looping, programming style

· Week 3 – dictionaries, reading and writing files, string matching

· Week 4 – Sorting, functions/subroutines/packages

· Week 5 –complex data structures

· Week 6 – More complex data structures

· Week 8 – string processing, command line options

· Week 9 – interaction with OS, using Python as a glue language, coding strategies

· Week 10 – Internet programming, user-agents, HTML

· Week 11 – SOAP and REST web services, XML processing, introduction to RDBMS

· Week 12 – RDBMS, basic database structures, SQL queries

·  Week 11 – Object oriented approaches

· Week 13 – Graphics

2026 Neuroscience Workshops at the Allen Institute

We are excited to share with you a number of our 2026 neuroscience workshops and events which are currently accepting applications. We have programs for neuroscientists at every career stage and encourage you to explore the list and apply.

All events are hosted at the Allen Institute in Seattle, Washington unless otherwise noted. There is no fee to apply or attend, though accepted attendees are responsible for their own travel costs, with some travel support available.

Why Participate as a Mentor?

GradBridge: Engineering Career Mentoring Circles connects graduate students and postdocs with professionals and faculty mentors who can share insights into career paths in engineering. The program provides space for interactive conversations on career exploration, professional growth, and navigating transitions into academia, industry, government, and entrepreneurship.

 

What: Mentoring Circles will be made up of ~8 graduate students/postdocs and two professionals who will serve as mentors. GradBridge will provide a sample schedule and discussion topics to guide each meeting.

When: Three 1.5-hour meetings during February 2026 (Tuesdays Feb 10th, 17th, and 24th) from 7-8:30pm eastern. Optional Kickoff Meeting on Tuesday Feb 3rd. All sessions are held virtually on Zoom.

 

Deadline: Monday, January 5, 2026, by 8:00am EST. This program is dependent on mentor participation, if you know that you want to participate, then don’t wait! Apply now!

Selection: Selected mentors will be notified by the end of January 2026.
