Re-Engineering Health Care Around the Individual:
A Path Forward to Improve All Lives

Abstract:
For centuries now, health care has centered around episodes of care that primarily occur when a person feels unwell enough to seek care. Historically, the care that person
receives has been determined by multiple factors, most out of their control: 1) The local availability of affordable systems of care with the diagnostic and therapeutic tools needed, 2) The reachable caregiver’s perceptions of what might be causing that person’s
symptoms, and 3) How well the existing evidence helping guide therapeutic decision-making happens to fit that person’s multiple unique characteristics.
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted how these historical practices fall well-short for too many in our nation and across the globe, including bringing long-overdue attention
to deeply entrenched health disparities. On a more positive note, the enormous volume of problems surfaced by the pandemic forced the rapid acceleration of innovative solutions, many enabled through a wide range of novel digital health technologies. Early
findings from this work provide promising evidence of the value of individualized, continuous monitoring for improving outcomes in a rapidly scalable manner. Translating these promising digital tools into actual health solutions is a major challenge. New systems
of care, built around the individual, and using the capabilities that digital technologies allow, are what is needed. Creating these new systems requires a strong, ongoing collaboration between engineers, data scientists, computer scientists, behavioral scientists,
and healthcare providers with a singular focus on creating solutions that can improve the health of all individuals.
In this seminar, I will present how recent COVID-related research demonstrates how digital health technologies can enable individualized care, and discuss a path forward
for re-engineering health care.
Bio:
Dr. Steinhubl is a career-long clinician-scientist and the founding Director of Digital Medicine at Scripps Research’s Translational Institute. In 2021 he
transitioned part-time to physIQ, a healthcare data analytics start-up as their Chief Medical Officer. He also remains clinically active as a cardiologist for the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. He received his undergraduate training in chemical
engineering at Purdue University, medical degree at St. Louis University and cardiology training at the Cleveland Clinic.
His recent research has focused on the implementation of clinical programs built specifically around the novel capabilities of digital technologies, especially
those made possible through combining novel sensor technologies and AI-based insights to provide personalized, real-time analytics to identify individual changes in health.
Steve has been the principal investigator of dozens of nationwide and global clinical trials, has published over 280 peer-reviewed articles and was the founding
Editor-in-Chief of Nature Partner Journal - Digital Medicine. He is also the occasional breakfast cook at his wife’s B&B,
