HEADS NOTE

We made it through our first week of the fall semester and capped it off with a great student fair and ice cream social.  It was great to see so many new and returning faces at the event with 171 new incoming sophomores and 80 new graduate students in MS, Professional Masters, and PhD programs.  This week, we welcome Dr. Luis Solorio as the new Director of the BME Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee- please see Dr. Jackie Linnes’ statement below.  I want to thank Jackie for her leadership and drive over the past two years as the inaugural director and I look forward to her continued leadership in BME as she also takes on additional responsibilities as the Director of the Honors program for the COE.  Congrats to both Luis and Jackie on these next steps.  Also, I want to remind students and postdocs to submit their Art of Research entries by this WEDNESDAY.  We have a great event lined up on September 9th where you’ll be able to present your work in a unique way to alumni, colleagues, and friends.

Wed., Aug. 31:  BME Seminar, 9:30 a.m. in MJIS 1001 or via Zoom. Danielle E. Soranno, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Indiana University School of Medicine will present “Long-term Kidney and Systemic Sequelae of Acute Kidney Injury.”

Thurs., Sept. 1 – Fri., Sept. 2: Nanomedicine Drug Delivery Symposium (nanoDDS) hybrid meeting , at Carolina Inn, Chapel Hill, NC. Join scientists from academia and industry for lectures from distinguished speakers focused on drug delivery

Wed., Sept. 7 – Wed., Oct. 26:  Flu shots available to faculty and staff. All benefits-eligible employees and dependents covered on a Purdue health plan are eligible to receive the free flu vaccine. Mon.-Tues., Oct. 10-11:  Purdue Octoberbreak. No classes, but offices and buildings open normal hours.

Tues., Oct. 11:  MJIS Air Handling Shutdown beginning at 7:30 AM and lasting until approx. 3:00 PM for preventative maintenance of the building’s air systems. This includes air ventilation supplies to all public, classroom and research areas, including chemical fume hoods. There should be NO chemicals used anywhere! All chemical fume hood activity should terminate by 5 PM Monday October 10th. You must make sure all chemical containers are sealed at that time. Chemical fume hoods will have notices posted - do not resume activity until BME staff have verified that work is complete, and have removed postings.

Wed., Nov. 9 – Sat., Nov. 12: The is a go-to conference for underrepresented groups in STEM fields. Scientific or professional development session submissions due July 29.

DEI Committee Update

(From Jackie Linnes): It has been a great pleasuring serving as the Director of Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in the Weldon School over the last 2 years. I am taking on a new role within the College of Engineering as the Director of the Honors Program and I want to ensure continuing momentum of DEI support in the School. I worked with Dr. Umulis to identify and ask the next Director for our school and I’m happy to report that Dr. Luis Solorio has accepted this responsibility. I look forward to remaining involved in the Weldon School community and supporting the efforts of the DEI Steering Committee under its new. As a U.S. Army veteran with an award-winning teaching record and a highly successful, diverse, and inclusive research lab, Dr. Solorio has demonstrated commitment and aptitude for his new role as DEI Director at the Weldon School. I look forward to building an even more inclusive, diverse and equitable community under his leadership. 

 

I’m proud of what we were able to do as a school in support of DEI during my time as the director. With representation from faculty, staff and students, and support from departmental leadership, the DEI Steering Committee has built off of the Diversity and Inclusion Working group and the welcoming culture of the Weldon School to further provide support for our diverse, welcoming and inclusive community. From initiating an all-school climate survey to identify needs in the Weldon School to building the graduate peer mentoring program and DEI journal clubs with BMEGSA, to co-developing the Undergraduate Resource Center with Academic Programs, to generating holistic faculty hiring rubrics, to setting up our High School Outreach to local high schools and Summer Internships for underrepresented students, the committee has already made many positive impacts in the Weldon School. I look forward to supporting Dr. Solorio during the transition and continuing to be involved where I can, while also taking on new opportunities for mentorship and training in the College of Engineering.

Danielle E. Soranno, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Indiana University School of Medicine will present “Long-term Kidney and Systemic Sequelae of Acute Kidney Injury.”

Dr. Soranno’s research focuses on the long-term kidney and systemic sequelae of acute kidney injury (AKI). Her laboratory uses injectable hydrogels for sustained local delivery of therapeutics (i.e. cytokines, cell therapies) to improve outcomes after AKI. As part of her work, she has described important differences in cardiovascular outcomes based upon sex. Current work is focused on discerning the sex differences in AKI outcomes. In addition to her basic science work, Dr. Soranno collaborates in multicentered clinical research initiatives investigating pediatric AKI. To this end, she has built a bench-to-bedside translational research program investigating long-term AKI outcomes. Dr. Soranno’s collaborative research efforts will bring a bench-to-bedside pediatric AKI program to Indiana University and provide research training and opportunities for biomedical engineering students to pursue innovation within the field of pediatrics. It is anticipated that these collaborative interactions will result in the development of innovative solutions to pediatric-specific clinical dilemmas. Dr. Soranno is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine, and an attending pediatric nephrologist at Riley Hospital for Children. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering and medical school training at Case Western Reserve University. She received her residency training in pediatrics at the University of Colorado, and then went to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania for her fellowship training in pediatric nephrology. She served as faculty at the University of Colorado from 2013-2022 prior to being recruited to Indiana University in 2022.

The goal of the Art in Research exhibition is to creatively highlight the research of BME students in a visually intriguing way. This will also be a great opportunity to communicate your research to other students, faculty, staff, visiting alumni and members of the Weldon School Advisory Board. The image may be a photograph, illustration, micrograph, visualization, rendering, drawing, or any other static visual medium that represents an important aspect of your research. Entries must be submitted by Wednesday, August 31 at 11:59 p.m. All BME students are invited to attend the Art Expo and reception on Friday, September 9, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the MJIS Atrium. Kristy Ainslie, Juliane Nguyen, Yevgeny Brudno and Owen Fenton) invites you to attend a hybrid meeting September 1-2, 2022, at Carolina Inn, Chapel Hill, NC. Join scientists from academia and industry for lectures from distinguished speakers focused on drug delivery. Register today at this link. The NanoDDS series was founded in 2003 by Dr. Alexander Kabanov and Dr. Kazunori Kataoka. Since then, NanoDDS has been held annually in different locations in North America, providing students, postdocs, and faculty exposure to the most recent developments and advancements in drug delivery.
