Thesis/Dissertation Area Updates

I wanted to share a few updates related to the thesis area. First, we have officially retired the G.S. Form 37, which was previously used to request post-facto edits to a deposited thesis or dissertation. Instead, students requesting this or any other exception to Graduate School policy should submit a letter justifying the request endorsed by major professor and the head/chair of the graduate program to the Graduate School office at your respective campus (see Section VII.I of the University Catalog).  

Second, if your students are using, or think they may use, the PurdueThesis LaTeX document class for their thesis or dissertation, please have them sign up for the PurdueThesis mailing list so they can stay up to date on communications related to LaTeX.  See the first paragraph of https://engineering.purdue.edu/~mark/PurdueThesis for the web address of the mailing list.

Lastly, I wanted to share that Carla Coffey has accepted the Graduate Records Coordinator of Theses & Dissertations position at the West Lafayette campus. She has worked for the Graduate School here since 2017, and has 6 years of experience working in the thesis area already. We are thrilled for her to join the Records team in an area where she already has a high level of expertise, and believe her skills and experience will be a great asset to students and staff. Carla officially starts in this new role this Monday, February 6, 2023.

Lecturer job ad summary

The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University has openings for Lecturer positions. Our community of 1,200 undergraduates, 400 graduate students, and more than 150 faculty and staff make us one of the largest and most diverse BME programs in the country. We value and work to improve our educational programs as evidenced by the 2019 Bernard M. Gordon prize.

For this role, we are interested in candidates who contribute to the culture of instructional excellence and ongoing innovation primarily but not solely in our undergraduate program. We have specifically identified four areas of focus for these positions: (1) fluid mechanics, transport phenomena, and related biological mechanisms and biomedical applications; (2) introduction to human physiology, biological systems physiology, and organ function; (3) engineering design, especially medical devices, FDA regulation, and human-centered design; (4) engineering communication focused on storytelling to support individual development, leadership, and career progress. Boilers Work Internship Program – Now Accepting Submissions!

The Boilers Work internship program is now open and accepting submissions for the summer of 2023! This internship program provides ten graduate students per year with a stipend to pursue an unpaid summer internship. This year, the stipend award has increased to $7,500! This program is intended to help students garner real-world work experience, refine soft skills, and establish career connections before graduation. Attached is a 2022 Boilers Work recipient's experience!

The deadline to submit is April 3rd by 11:59 p.m. Awards will be announced on April 14th.

The Nanotechnology Student Advisory Council (NSAC) would like to invite you to attend our conference & distinguished lecture on Friday, 24 Feb., 2023. Attached are informational flyers for the events, but here is a summary of all the most important details:

• Register by Thurs. 09 Feb. to guarantee your lunch! Food will be served after the distinguished lecture.

• We are still looking for presenters for the lecture and poster sessions! Posters and talks from up to two years ago can be reused. We will print new posters for free! Deadline for free printing is Sun 12 Feb.

• We will notify you that you have been accepted to present on a rolling basis. Talks should be about 10-15 min, and posters will be displayed in the Birck Nanotech Center atrium.

• $100 cash prizes will be awarded to the best poster and best presentation. Honorable mentions will also be given.

• Prof. Yurii Vlasov comes from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to discuss his research in integrated neurotechnology. He is a pioneer in the field, having earned membership to the National Academy of Engineers as well as fellowships from IEEE, APS, and Optica. He is a tenured professor in electrical & computer engineering, physics, materials science engineering, bio-engineering, and medicine.  This is a talk you don’t want to miss!

Two Days Left to Submit 3MT Materials!

There are only two days left to submit your research video entries for a chance to participate in the Graduate School’s annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition! This is an exciting year to participate, as we have increased the cash prizes, which include $5,000 for first place, $3,000 for second place, and $2,000 for the People’s Choice Award winner.

What is 3MT®?

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition that helps graduate students develop academic, presentation, and research communication skills so that they can effectively explain their research to a non-specialist audience. During each competition, graduate students will have three minutes to present a compelling discussion on their research topic, including its significance and relevance, to the general public. This is a fast-paced competition where the top 10 finalists compete by summarizing their two to three-plus years of research in only three minutes with just one slide.
