Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to learn about THREE postdoctoral programs in the Chicagoland area and the cutting-edge research happening at each institution. More than 150
faculty members from the three institutions have signed-up to participate
in the Initiative!
This is a collaborative initiative to improve diversity and inclusion at the three largest research universities in the Chicago area, with the goal of addressing the "pipeline" challenge in academia for historically marginalized graduate students and postdocs,
including individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds, who have disabilities, who identify as LGBTQIA+, who are veterans, or who were first-generation college students or Pell-eligible. Selected participants will learn about postdoctoral
programs in the Chicagoland area, how to find postdoctoral opportunities, how to apply for postdoctoral positions, and how to maximize your postdoctoral experiences. Following these two days of programming, participants will conduct informational interviews
with matched faculty members through November 4th.

Applicants should be advanced graduate students (have passed qualifying exam or are post-candidacy by October 20, 2022), recent PhD graduates, or early-stage postdocs in STEM fields. There is no citizenship requirement to apply for this event.

Graduate Research Assistant Position for Physics-based Neuroimaging Analysis
The Garcia Lab applies physical concepts (mechanics) to understand both brain growth and degeneration. Current clinical research collaborations seek to link differences in cortical
expansion and shrinkage, assessed with novel physics-based MRI analysis tools, to functional deficits in human. Complementary to this work, we are using multiscale computational modeling, informed by experimental data from animal models, to uncover the biological
mechanisms underlying these structural changes during critical periods of brain change.
We are seeking a graduate student researcher to conduct physics-based analysis of human MRI data across multiple large and unique datasets. The position will focus on 2 related
projects, with additional opportunities to explore new research directions:
1.
Enhanced detection of cortical atrophy as a biomarker of early cognitive decline.
2.
Characterization of cortical atrophy in individuals with hypertension and/or diabetes.
Backgrounds in neuroscience, neuroimaging, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, informatics and/or computer science are welcome.
Requirements: proficient in MATLAB, shell scripting, and statistical software; willing to learn neuroimaging research tools

and the IU Health Neuroscience Center. As part of Indiana University, the School of Medicine also benefits from a wide network of computational and research resources accessible from any campus across the state. Indiana University serves as a key partner in
the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (Indiana CTSI), which facilitates collaboration and shared resources with Purdue University and the University of Notre Dame.

Evansville is the third largest city in Indiana, serving a patient population of ~2M from the tristate area. Within the city, Downtown Evansville has witnessed immense growth and
redevelopment in the last ten years, becoming a vibrant hub for southern Indiana. The IU School of Medicine-Evansville is located within the Stone Family Center for Health Sciences, a state-of-the-art multi-institutional medical teaching facility in southern
Indiana. Located in the heart of Downtown Evansville, the Stone Center is home to the healthcare professional training programs of Indiana University, University of Evansville, and University of Southern Indiana. In addition to training medical students in
Evansville, the Indiana University School of Medicine Southwest Indiana Residency Programs offer training in Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, and Family Medicine. The Stone Family Center and surrounding buildings are the beginning phase of a medical research
corridor, located adjacent to Deaconess Clinic and Deaconess Research Institute. Ongoing developments are underway to operationalize an Indiana CTSI Clinical Research Center, IU School of Dentistry Clinic, and recently-announced Mary O’Daniel Stone and Bill
Stone Center for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

2022 Rising Stars in Engineering in Health Workshop hosted by JHU & Columbia

The application for the 2022 Rising Stars in Engineering in Health Workshop, hosted jointly by Johns Hopkins Biomedical Engineering and Columbia University, is now open! Now in
its third year, the Rising Stars in Engineering in Health Workshop aims to educate, train, and empower the next generation of leaders in academia at the intersection of engineering and the biomedical sciences.
The two-day, in-person, interactive workshop will take place on Friday-Saturday, November 18-19, 2022 on the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus in Baltimore, MD and will feature rapid-fire
research talks, educational presentations, intensive workshops, mock interviews, and panel discussions with Columbia and Johns Hopkins faculty.
We welcome applicants from across the United States, including postdoctoral fellows, research scientists, and graduate students who are working at the intersection of engineering
and the biomedical sciences and are one to two years away from applying for a faculty position. As both Johns Hopkins and Columbia Universities pursue excellence in engineering as applied to human health, our priority is to do so in an environment that embraces
diversity, equity, and inclusion. With this in mind, we strongly encourage applicants from groups that are historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines.
Eligibility:
Applicants must be doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, or research scientists who plan to seek a faculty position in fields at the intersection of engineering and the biomedical
sciences in the next one to two years (positions starting in fall 2023 or later).
Selection:
From the applicant pool, twenty Rising Stars will be selected to participate as presenters and participants in the Workshop. All qualified applicants, whether they are selected
as a Rising Star or not, will be invited to participate virtually in select educational portions of the Workshop.

Google Fellowships are awarded to doctoral students who will have completed their academic coursework by Fall 2022. Fellows are provided with a stipend for up to three years along

Apple Scholars in AI/ML Fellowships are awarded to PhD students who are entering year 2 or year 3 of their program with an estimated graduation date of May 2024 or later. Fellows

The Teaching and Learning in Engineering Graduate Certificate is designed for Ph.D. students in any engineering discipline interested in pursuing a faculty career – at either a
research intensive or teaching focused institution. The certificate, offered by Purdue’s School of Engineering Education, consists of four courses, all of which are taught each semester. Students already enrolled in an engineering Ph.D. program at Purdue

ENE 50600, Content, Assessment and Pedagogy (3 credit hours), teaches you how
to develop a course from beginning to end and guides you through the process of developing a course in your field.
ENE 68500, Engineering Education Methods (3 credit hours), provides you with
a variety of techniques for teaching courses that are both engaging and effective.
ENE 68700, Mentored Teaching in Engineering (1 credit hour), enables you to
deepen your understanding of teaching and learning through feedback and reflection as you perform your regularly assigned teaching duties.
ENE 69500, Succeeding as an Engineering Professor (3 credit hours), covers other
skills valuable to faculty members such as writing proposals, selecting and mentoring graduate students, and managing projects, along with development of research, teaching, and diversity statements typically required for faculty applications.
