Alumni, colleagues, and friends of the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering,
Welcome to our spring newsletter! In this letter I want to highlight the outstanding achievements of our students and welcome a new class of graduates. Our School continues to rise in the rankings and our College of Engineering achieved another outstanding
year with an
overall #4 ranking according to US News & World Report. This spring, several faculty members led students internationally for service learning, and study abroad experiences in
Rwanda and South Korea and several trips are underway in May to Japan and Scandinavia. Each trip is centered around a critical aspect of Biomedical Engineering – whether the focus is regulatory affairs, agent-based modeling,
or point-of-care diagnostics, these immersive experiences have lasting impact. Also, this spring, it was great to add to our alumni numbers! Ninety-two undergraduate students received their BS degree in BME, and 41 graduate students completed their MS and
PhD degrees. This upcoming fall we welcome 140 new sophomore students, continuing our nearly 20% year-over-year growth in students choosing BME!
Our faculty have excelled in research, teaching, and entrepreneurship this year. BME faculty-led companies have received substantial recognition and funding this year including Dr. Kinzer-Ursem and Dr. Linnes’ company
OmniVis, and Dr. Harbin’s
GeniPhys. Faculty member Dr. Duerstock was elected to the
AIMBE College of Fellows and Dr. Vlachos was elected as a Fellow of the
American Heart Association. We continue to build momentum in BME and the next few years will see tremendous new opportunities emerge in Indianapolis and West Lafayette for current and future Boilermakers. Thanks again

Purdue, IU research teams awarded pilot funding through Engineering in Medicine collaboration

from Purdue’s Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, spring break was an opportunity to study abroad to experience new cultures, make new connections, and grow their skills in the field of biomedical engineering.

Purdue BME student selected for NSF Graduate Research Fellowship
|

Mikayla Roach, PhD student from Purdue University’s Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering has been selected for the National Science Foundation’s 2023 Graduate
Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP). The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited
United States institutions.

Frazier selected for DoD National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship
|

Purdue Weldon School PhD student Lizzy Frazier was recently selected to receive the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate
(NDSEG) Fellowship. The NDSEG Fellowship is designed to increase the number of U.S. citizens or nationals trained in disciplines of science and engineering of military importance.
