medical technology innovation and clinical translation. Funds to support a summer clinical immersion experience are available to help students gain clinical exposure at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM). This
full-time 8-week summer clinical immersion experience will be followed by a fall class focused on biomedical product translation (BME 56100 Preclinical and Clinical Study Design or BME 59500 Biomedship). Finally, a spring Regulatory class will help fellows
understand the workings of the US FDA and other regulatory agencies and the steps needed for clinical translation. Applications are due by Friday, March 8th.

Biography:
Dr.
Jennifer S. Wayne received her BS degree in Engineering Mechanics (summa cum laude) from Virginia Tech, MS degree in Biomedical Engineering from Tulane University, and PhD degree in Bioengineering from the University of California at San Diego. She began
her faculty career at Virginia Commonwealth University in a joint appointment with Biomedical Engineering and Orthopaedic Surgery. She directed the VCU Orthopaedic Research Laboratory and served as Associate Chair and Graduate Program Director of Biomedical
Engineering. She mentored over 125 residents, fellows, and medical students in basic research as well as over 30 senior capstone projects and 30 graduate theses. She came full circle in 2019, returning to her alma mater as Professor and Department Head of
Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics (BEAM) at Virginia Tech. She currently works in the College of Engineering and BEAM.
Dr.
Wayne served ASME in multiple capacities including the first female chair of the Bioengineering Division. She received the prestigious ASME H.R. Lissner Medal in June 2019, the first female to receive this honor in its 42-year history. She was further honored
by ASME with the Dedicated Service Award in 2023. Dr. Wayne is chair of the Academic Council of AIMBE. She is a Program Evaluator for ABET, the international accrediting body for engineering, technology, and applied science and an ABET Commissioner to the
Engineering Accreditation Commission. She is a member of the BMES Accreditation Activities Committee.
In addition, she served on the Board of Directors of the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) and was a member of the World Council of Biomechanics, an Associate Editor for JBME, and an Academic Editor for PLOS ONE. Dr. Wayne
is a Fellow of ASME, of AIMBE, of ORS, and of BMES.

Abstract:
Engineers are in the practice of making technological systems more efficient. That means designing products and equipment that deliver more services with less resource inputs. Engineers have been improving productivity and designing out waste for centuries,
but it is only now – as society faces climate change and other ecological crises – that this role takes on a global scope. How can the practice of engineering help to address the problem of reducing ecological impacts at a planetary scale?
In
this talk, I will discuss how engineering has generally approached the problem of sustainability through traditional tools of product-level efficiency improvement. We have more efficient cars, light bulbs, HVAC systems, and recycling schemes all designed in
the name of a clean, green, and circular economy. But these efforts do not add up to global-scale reductions in ecological impacts such as climate change because the global economy is constantly growing. Thus, resources freed up by efficiency improvements
will not actually be “saved”, they will be reutilized elsewhere in the economy.
I will
argue for engineers to consider degrowth – a deliberate reduction in the size of the economy – as the context in which more efficient technologies will deliver true and lasting reductions in ecological impact. This shift in perspective will require an evolutionary
process (a praxis) of updating terms, methods, and analytical frameworks; ideally starting in the fields of environmental and ecological engineering. I will support my argument with research findings, personal stories from a career in sustainability, and the
collective experience of Degrowth Coffee Hour, an effort to pursue degrowth praxis within the engineering practice, right here at Purdue.

Abstract:
Stem cells respond to many cues from their microenvironment, which may include chemical and mechanical signals. These important cues can be incorporated into biomaterials to control stem cell differentiation and morphogenesis. Here, we discuss our recent
efforts to design synthetic biomaterials as a modular platform to direct stem cell fate and morphogenesis into the blood and lymphatic vasculatures. First, we have used multilamellar lipid nanoparticles to rejuvenate vascular progenitor cells and improve their
therapeutic potential. By controlling the release kinetic of various bioactive molecules to the surface of vascular progenitor cells, we not only improve cell migration, but also augment their angiogenic potential
in vitro and in vivo. Second, we have used hyaluronic acid (HA)-based hydrogels to promote lymphatic network formation. By tuning the mechanical properties of the hydrogels, we have demonstrated that HA-hydrogels preserve key lymphatic phenotypes
and matrix stiffness primes lymphatic tube formation directed by VEGF-C. Finally, we have utilized alternating current (AC) electrospray to encapsulate stem cells and produce granular hydrogels. The electrically induced “tip streaming” mode has enabled high-throughput
encapsulation of stem cells with high efficiency and universality. Collectively, these recent advances in biomaterials design and fabrication provides us the opportunity to control stem cell differentiation and morphogenesis for a range of biomedical applications.
Biography:
Donny
Hanjaya-Putra is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering Graduate Program, and member of the Harper Cancer Research Institute at the University of Notre Dame. His research focuses on the study of thrombosis
and hemostasis, stem cell engineering, vascular and lymphatic morphogenesis, as well as synthesis of bio-inspired
materials and tissue-engineered constructs. His lab is interested to understand what governs the formation of blood and lymphatic vessels from stem cells and how these insights can be used to develop novel therapies. He has received numerous awards, including
NIH Maximizing Investigator’s Research Award R35, NSF CAREER Award, Career Development Award from American Heart Association, CMBE Young Innovator Award, and Siebel Scholar Award. Research projects in his lab are currently being supported by both federal and
private funding agencies, including NSF, NIH, American Cancer Society, DoD Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI) / BioFab USA, and American Heart Association.

Abstract:
While Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most prevalent cause of dementia, postmortem examinations reveal that at least half of clinically diagnosed AD patients exhibit cerebrovascular disease (CVD), potentially contributing to cognitive impairment and
dementia. Despite this association, the mediation pathways between AD, related dementias, and vascular disease remain poorly understood, and treatments often overlook the multi-etiological nature of dementia. To provide insights into AD and CVD relationships,
non-invasive Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is being utilized in longitudinal studies involving AD risk-enriched populations. However, current clinically available MRI techniques lack sensitivity and specificity to address key vascular hypotheses in such
studies. MRI methods commonly employed today, such as fluid attenuation and susceptibility imaging only indirectly characterize CVD and cannot inform on the dynamic neurofluid flow and vascular motion phenomena that are hypothesized to interact with AD related
pathology. This presentation will introduce a variety of MRI strategies designed to improve the characterization of CVD in the context of aging and AD, including a description of challenges associated with technical and physiological variability. Findings
from risk-enriched populations and biomarker-confirmed AD patients will also be presented.
Biography:
I
obtained a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics from the University of Puerto Rico – Humacao. Subsequently, I completed my Ph.D. in Physics at UW-Madison, focusing on the optimization of MRI methods for assessing cerebrovascular hemodynamics under the guidance
of Dr. Oliver Wieben. Following my doctoral studies, I pursued a post-doctoral fellowship at the same institution, where I worked on accelerated Non-Cartesian sampling acquisition and constrained image reconstruction methods for neuroimaging. This included
work on motion-encoded pulse sequences and contrast-enhanced MRI, supervised by Dr. Kevin M. Johnson. Currently, I serve as an Associate Scientist at the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at UW-Madison. In this role, I collaborate closely with
investigators from the Departments of Medical Physics, Radiology, Medicine, and Kinesiology. My research interests revolve around the development of sensitive markers for the characterization of cerebrovascular health, employing innovative MRI methods across
various stages from data acquisition and image reconstruction to post-processing strategies.

Fellow Opportunity – IUSM Emergency Medicine
The
laboratory of Dr. Nathan J. Alves, PhD, within the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), is seeking a highly motivated and independent post-doctoral research fellow. Dr. Alves is a Chemical
and Biomolecular Engineer, Associate Professor and the Director of Translational Research for the Department of Emergency Medicine in addition to having an affiliate faculty appointment at Purdue University in Biomedical Engineering. The Alves Lab explores
highly interdisciplinary research interests applying engineering and biophysical principles and designs to create translational technologies and treatments in the area of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis. The primary focus of research in the laboratory is
to develop targeted clot digesting therapeutic agents to more safely digest clinically relevant blood clots to treat pulmonary embolism (PE, blood clots in the lungs), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and ischemic stroke. This interdisciplinary
research utilizes diverse enzyme assays, chemical synthesis, blood clot formation and digestion assays under shear, and other novel testing/delivery platforms that include multivalent branched molecules and nanoparticle drug delivery systems. Projects Include:
(1) Leveraging multivalency to modulate enzyme activity and improve inhibitor selectivity (nanoparticle drug delivery and targeting). (2) Ex-vivo flowing models of clot digestion under shear using in-vivo like
fluorescently labeled blood clots from human whole blood. (3) Development of novel fibrinolytic diagnostics tools to assess coagulation state. (4) Mouse models of clot formation/targeting/digestion utilizing intravital microscopy. (5) Study the effects of
environmental microplastic exposure on coagulation/fibrinolysis. Projects are funded both externally and internally.
